Glossary for Erythema

Acute upper respiratory infection: Upper respiratory tract infections, are the illnesses caused by an acute infection which involves the upper respiratory tract: nose, sinuses, pharynx or larynx
Blood vessel conditions: Conditions that affect the blood vessels
Blood vessel symptoms: Symptoms affecting the blood vessels
Cellulitis: Inflammation of skin or subcutaneous tissues.
Chromosome 9q duplication syndrome: A rare chromosomal disorder involving duplication of the long arm (q) of chromosome 9 resulting in various abnormalities.
Conradi-Hunermann syndrome: A rare genetic disorder characterized by growth deficiency, short limbs, large skin pores, sparse hair and other abnormalities.
Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma: A malignancy of the T-cells which make up part of the body's immune system. The cancer is characterized by the excessive proliferation of T-cells which are a type of white blood cell. The degree of skin involvement is variable.
Dermatitis: General name for any type of skin inflammation.
Electrical burns: Burns caused when an electric current pass through the body or part of it. The symptoms and severity of the burn depends on the strength of the electrical current, the duration of the exposure and the part of the body involved. Prompt treatment in more severe cases can improve the prognosis.
Erythema ab igne:
Erythema elevatum diutinum: A rare chronic skin disorder characterized by skin nodules and plaques near joints and on the back of the hands and feet.
Erythema marginatum: A condition which is characterized by reddened areas of the skin which are disk shaped with elevated edges
Erythema multiforme: An allergic inflammatory skin disorder which has a variety of causes and results in skin and mucous membrane lesions that affect mainly the hands, forearms, feet, mouth nose and genitals.
Erythema nodosum: Allergic skin condition usually on the legs
Erythropoietic Protoporphyria: A condition where there is excessive formation of porphyrin or its precursor
Flushing: Involuntary skin redness usually of the face
Gitelman syndrome: A rare, relatively mild, genetic kidney disorder that causes hypokalemia. The defective gene (NCCT) impairs the function of the Na-Cl cotransporter.
Graft-versus-host disease: A disease characterised by an immune response as a result of a transplantation or transfusion resulting in a widespread systemic inflammatory response
Hot flushes: The occurance of the symptom of waves of a hot sensation over the body
Human parvovirus B19 infection: An infectious disease caused by parovirus B19 which causes fifth disease and erythema infectiosum.
Hyperemia: Increased blood flow in a part of the body. Symptoms depend on where the blood congestion occurs. It may affect any part of the body from areas of skin to organs or may affect the whole body.
Incontinentia Pigmenti: A rare genetic skin pigmentation disorder characterized by eye, teeth, bone, nail and hair malformations as well as central nervous abnormalities and mental deficiency.
Insect sting allergies: When a person has an allergic reaction at the site of an insect sting
Intertrigo: Skin inflammation from rubbing together of two skin areas
Latex allergies: When a person has an allergic reaction to latex
Lupus: Autoimmune disease with numerous effects on various organs and linings.
Lymphomatoid Granulomatosis: A rare, progressive blood vessel disease where nodular lesions destroy blood vessels - lungs, skin and nervous system are mainly involved.
Mycoplasma pneumoniae: Bacterial respiratory infection
Omenn syndrome: A rare inherited disorder of the immune system involving B and T lymphocytes and characterized by skin rash and frequent infections.
Pellagra: Dietary deficiency of vitamin B3 (niacin)
Perniosis: A blood vessel disorder where exposure to cord damp weather results in skin lesions on the extremities.
Pityriasis rubra pilaris: A chronic inflammatory skin condition
Psoriasis: Chronic skin rash condition, usually red or silver and blistery.
Recurring airway infection:
Scleredema adultorum: A rare skin condition characterized by thickening of the skin usually in the head, neck and upper body area. The disorder is often associated with conditions such as infections, myelomas and diabetes.
Shingles: Infectious viral infection occuring years after chickenpox infection.
Skin allergy: A skin allergy is an adverse response by the body's immune system to an allergen. The response may occur when the allergen comes into contact with the skin or when it is inhaled or ingested. A skin allergy manifests in skin symptoms such as hives and itchy skin. The severity of the response is variable.
Skin conditions: Any condition that affects the skin
Skin infection: A condition which is characterized by an infection which occurs on the skin
Skin infections: Infection or inflammation of the skin.
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome: A rare but serious condition involving inflammation and blistering of the skin and mucous membranes. It is believed to be an allergic reaction that can occur in response to some drugs or infectious diseases.
Sunburn: Any injury to the skin caused by the ultraviolet rays caused by the sun
Toxic epidermal necrolysis: A skin condition causing widespread blisters to erupt over greater than 30% of the body.
Wells syndrome: A rare disorder affecting the skin and characterized by a flame-shaped patch of raised red skin which eventually undergoes changes such as blistering and altered color.
