Glossary for Esophagus Cancer

  • Achalasia: A rare motor disorder of the esophagus characterized by inability of the lower esophageal sphincter and esophageal muscle to relax as well as dilation of the esophagus.
  • Acid reflux / heartburn:
  • Adenocarcinoma: A carcinoma derived from/within glandular tissue.
  • Ascites: Fluid accumulation in abdominal cavity
  • Back pain: Pain from the back or spine.
  • Barrett syndrome: A chronic peptic ulcer of the esophagus.
  • Barrett's esophagus: Damage to the cells lining the esophagus usually from refluxed acid.
  • Barrett's oesophagus: Barrett's esophagus is a disorder in which the lining of the esophagus is damaged. The damage is caused by stomach acid that leaks back into the esophagus. This leakage of acid is commonly known as "heartburn" (gastroesophageal reflux).
  • Bone cancer: Malignancy that occurs in the bone
  • Brain cancer: Cancer of the brain.
  • Cancer: Abnormal overgrowth of body cells.
  • Crohn's disease of the esophagus: A rare disorder where Crohn's disease occurs in the esophagus. Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammation of the walls of the digestive tract and usually occurs in the intestines.
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Diffuse leiomyomatosis with Alport syndrome: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by multiple tumors (in the esophagus, female genitals, trachea and bronchus) and Alport syndrome which involves progressive kidney dysfunction.
  • Digestive system cancer: A malignancy that affects the gastrointestinal cancer
  • Diverticular Disease: Protrusions of the colon wall (diverticulosis) or their inflammation (diverticulitis)
  • Esophageal diverticulum: Stretched pocket area of esophagus tissue

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: Repeated reflux of stomach acid into the throat.

  • Keratosis Palmaris Et Plantaris with Esophageal Cancer: A condition characterized by thickening of the skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet as well as an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer which increases with age.
  • Keratosis Palmoplantaris - Esophageal Carcinoma: A condition characterized by thickening of the skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet as well as an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer which increases with age.
  • Keratosis palmoplantaris with esophageal cancer: A very rare condition involving thickening and hardening of the horny layer of skin on the palms and soles as well as an frequent association with esophageal cancer.
  • Leiomyomatosis of esophagus, cataract and hematuria: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by cataracts, benign esophageal tumors and kidney cell cancer.
  • Leiomyomatosis of oesophagus, congenital cataract and hematuria: A rare disorder characterized by congenital cataracts, blood in urine and the development of tumors in the esophagus called a leiomyoma. A leiomyoma is a benign tumor that originates from smooth muscle tissue. These tumors may also be present in the female genital tract and possible in other parts of the body.
  • Liver cancer: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary malignancy of the liver.
  • Lung cancer: Lung cancer is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. This growth may lead to metastasis, which is the invasion of adjacent tissue and infiltration beyond the lungs. Most lung tumors are malignant.
  • Metastatic cancer: Any cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
  • Nicotine addiction: Nicotine addiction is the uncontrollable desire to continue smoking. Smoking products contain nicotine which is a chemical that can lead to addiction if used over a period of time. Cessation causes withdrawal symptoms which can vary in nature and severity.
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Oral Leukoplakia Associated with Tylosis and Esophageal Carcinoma: A condition characterized by thickening of the skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet as well as an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer which increases with age.
  • Pain swallowing: Pain related to the action of swallowing
  • Reflux: Rising stomach acid up the esophagus
  • Smoking: The smoking of cigarettes
  • Swallowing difficulty: Difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • Throat pain: The occurrence of pain which is located in the throat
  • Tylosis - oesophageal carcinoma: A condition characterized by thickening of the skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet as well as an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer which increases with age.
  • Tylosis, carcinoma of esophagus: A rare condition characterized by thickening of the skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet as well as esophageal cancer.
  • Weight loss: Loss of body weight.
