Glossary for Fabry's Disease

  • Abdominal Pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Angiokeratoma: A harmless, discolored, raised skin lesion involving damaged blood capillaries. The lesion ranges in color from red to blue and the skin involved is usually thickened.
  • Anhidrosis: A condition which is characterized by an absence of the ability to sweat
  • Artery symptoms: Symptoms affecting the arteries (large blood vessels)
  • Autonomic neuropathy: A disorder of the nervous system concerned with regulation of activity of cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and glands, usually restricted to the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
  • Burning symptoms: Any burning or burn-like sensations.
  • Cataracts: Cloudy areas on the eye's cornea interfering with vision.
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Cloudy vision: Cloudiness of the visual field
  • Delayed puberty: A lack of sexual maturation in an adolescent at an age significantly higher than the average age that child of that epidemiology attains puberty.
  • Digestive symptoms: Any symptoms affecting the digestive tract.
  • Dilantin - Teratogenic Agent: There is strong evidence to indicate that the use of Dilantin (anti-seizure medication) during pregnancy may cause a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Dilated cardiomyopathy: A rare chronic heart muscle condition where one or both heart ventricles are dilated or have impaired contractility.
  • Eye symptoms: Symptoms affecting the eye
  • Fatigue: Excessive tiredness or weakness.
  • Heart attack: Serious and often fatal acute heart condition
  • Hemangioma: A condition which is characterized by a benign tumour cause by newly formed blood vessels
  • Kidney disease: Reduced kidney function from various causes.
  • Meal symptoms: Symptoms related to meals.
  • Optic atrophy: Dysfunction of the optic nerve which results in impaired vision. The disorder may be congenital or acquired. The rate and degree of atrophy is greatly variable depending on the cause.
  • Osteoporosis: Bone thinning and weakening from bone calcium depletion.
  • Papilloedema: Oedema that is located at the optic disc
  • Proteinuria: Protein in the urine
  • Proximal Renal Tubular Acidosis: This is a condition that is characterised by a metabolic acidosis state caused by impairment of a persons renal function
  • Raynaud's phenomenon: Blood vessel constriction attacks affecting fingers and/or toes.
  • Redness: Reddening of the skin.
  • Sphingolipidosis: A group of diseases involving the abnormal metabolism and storage of a substance called sphingolipid. Symptoms will vary depending on the disease. Examples of diseases from this group include gangliosidosis, Gaucher's disease and Niemann-Pick disease.
  • Stroke: Serious brain event from bleeding or blood clots.
  • Telangiectasia: The permanent dilation of pre-existing small blood vessels
  • Tinnitus: Hearing noises in the ears: ringing, roaring, clicks, whistling, or hissing.
  • Vertigo: The odd balance sensation of inappropriate spinning or movement of the environment
