Glossary for Fibromyalgia

• Alternating Bowel Habit IBS: It is a functional bowel disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits in the absence of any organic cause. IBS may be associated with pain disorders.
• Alzheimer's Disease: Dementia-causing brain disease mostly in seniors and the elderly.
• Anemia: Reduced ability of blood to carry oxygen from various possible causes.
• Arthritis: General name for any type of joint inflammation, but often means age-related osteoarthritis.
• Bone pain: Bone pain or tenderness is aching or other discomfort in one or more bones.
• Chemical addiction: Addiction to and abuse of various substances.
• Chiari Malformation: Protrusion of the brain down the spinal column.
• Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Severe chronic fatigue disorder often following infection.
• Chronic Pain Syndromes: Any of a variety of disorders that can cause chronic pain of different types.

• Deposition diseases related fibromyalgia: Deposition diseases related fibromyalgia refers to fibromyalgia that is associated with deposition diseases. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized mainly by pain mainly in the muscles which involves no associated damage to the tissues. Deposition diseases involve the abnormal deposit of material in parts of the body such as the joints e.g. gout.
• Depression: Various syndromes with excessive anxiety, phobias, or fear.
• Dermatomyositis: A muscle disease characterized by chronic muscle inflammation resulting in progressive muscle weakness and a characteristic rash.
• Diabetes: Failing or reduced ability of the body to handle sugars.
• Diarrhea-predominant IBS: IBS is a functional bowel disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits
• Epstein Barr virus related fibromyalgia: Epstein Barr virus related fibromyalgia refers to fibromyalgia that is associated with infection with the Epstein Barr virus. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized mainly by pain mainly in the muscles which involves no associated damage to the tissues.
• Fatigue: Excessive tiredness or weakness.
• Gulf War syndrome: Syndrome in military veterans of the Gulf war
• HIV/AIDS: HIV is a sexually transmitted virus and AIDS is the progressive immune failure that HIV causes.
• Hemochromatosis: Excess of iron leading to problems with joints, liver, heart and pancreas.
• Hypochondriasis: A disorder characterised by a preoccupation with normal bodily functions as abnormalities
• Hypoglycemia: Low blood sugar level
• Hypophosphatemia: Low blood phosphate levels. Causes include malnourishment, chronic alcoholism excessive carbohydrate consumption, malabsorption, phosphaturia, liver failure, respiratory alkalosis and certain genetic disorders.
• Hypopituitarism: A disorder caused by reduced pituitary hormone levels. Hormones produce by the pituitary gland produces growth hormones, prolactin, thyroid stimulating hormone, antidiuretic hormone and others.
• Hypothyroidism: Too little thyroid hormone production.
• Inclusion Body Myositis: Progressive inflammatory muscle disease causing muscle weakness.
• Inflammatory bowel disease: Any type of digestive condition caused by bowel inflammation.
• Injury: Any damage inflicted in the body
• Irritable bowel syndrome: Spasms in the colon wall
• Jaw conditions: Conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (the jaw).
• Lupus: Autoimmune disease with numerous effects on various organs and linings.
• Lyme disease: Lyme disease is an emerging infectious disease caused by at least three species of bacteria belonging to the genus Borrelia.
• Major depressive disorder related fibromyalgia: Major depressive disorder related fibromyalgia refers to fibromyalgia that is associated with major depression. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized mainly by pain mainly in the muscles which involves no associated damage to the tissues.
• Malingering: The faking or exaggeration of symptoms of a particular condition
• Mononucleosis: Common infectious virus.
• Morgellons Disease: A rare disorder involving a variety of skin symptoms such as unusual sensations, skin lesions and the presence of fiber-like particles in or on the skin. There is still dissension over whether this is an actual disorder or whether it is a psychotic disorder or a skin disorder. Further research is being planned.
• Multiple Sclerosis: Autoimmune attack on spinal nerves causing diverse and varying neural problems.
• Muscle pain: Pain that is located anatomically in the region of muscles
• Muscle spasms: Involuntary movement or contraction of muscles without full control
• Myasthenia Gravis: An autoimmune disorder which interferes with nerve impulses to muscles and hence results in weak, easily fatigued muscles.
• Myoclonus: Sudden involuntary muscle twitching or movement.
• Myofascial pain syndromes: Any pain associated with the myofascia of the muscle tissue
• Ménière's disease: Ear fluid disorder causing balance problems.
• Neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy is the term for damage to nerves of the peripheral nervous system, which may be caused either by diseases of the nerve or from the side-effects of systemic illness.
• Obstructive sleep apnea: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome is characterized by episodic upper airway obstruction that occurs during sleep.
• Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition characterised by mechanical disrturbances due to degradation of joints. It is the most common form of arthritis, and the leading cause of chronic disability.
• Osteomalacia: A condition where the bones gradually soften and bend due to poor calcification stemming from a lack or impaired metabolism of vitamin D.
• Pain: A feeling of suffering, agony, distress caused by the stimulation of pain fibres in the nervous system
• Parvovirus: A family of viruses that contain the human parvo virus B19
• Periodic limb movements in sleep: Repeated involuntary leg movements during sleep.
• Polymyalgia rheumatica: A condition characterized by muscle pain and stiffness, fatigue and fever. It is often associated with giant-cell arteritis which is a related but more serious condition.
• Post-infectious IBS: Post-infecttios IBS is a functional bowel disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits following any infection affecting the body.
• Primary Fibromyalgia: Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized mainly by pain mainly in the muscles which involves no associated damage to the tissues. Primary fibromyalgia is a term given to fibromyalgia that occurs for no apparent reason whereas secondary fibromyalgia has an identifiable cause. The primary form is more common than the secondary form.
• Radiculopathy: A condition characterized by disease of the nerve roots
• Restless leg syndrome: Restless leg syndrome is a condition that is characterized by an irresistible urge to move one's body to stop uncomfortable or odd sensations. It most commonly affects the legs, but can also affect the arms or torso.
• Rheumatic conditions: Any condition that affects ones joints
• Rheumatoid arthritis: Autoimmune form of arthritis usually in teens or young adults.
• Rheumatoid arthritis related fibromyalgia: Rheumatoid arthritis related fibromyalgia refers to fibromyalgia that is associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized mainly by pain mainly in the muscles which involves no associated damage to the tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory form of arthritis and is an autoimmune disease.
• SLE related fibromyalgia: SLE related fibromyalgia refers to fibromyalgia that is associated with systemic lupus erythematosus. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized mainly by pain mainly in the muscles which involves no associated damage to the tissues. SLE is an autoimmune disease that can affect virtually any body system e.g. blood vessels and organs.
• Sciatica: Sciatica is a set of symptoms including pain that may be caused by general compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that give rise to the sciatic nerve, or by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve itself.
• Secondary Fibromyalgia: Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized mainly by pain mainly in the muscles which involves no associated damage to the tissues. Primary fibromyalgia is a term given to fibromyalgia that occurs for no apparent reason whereas secondary fibromyalgia has an identifiable cause. The primary form is more common than the secondary form.
• Shoulder Pain: A pain that occurs in the shoulder. There is often other associated symptoms depending on the cause of the shoulder pain. For example, swelling may indicate a broken bone.
• Sjogren's Syndrome: Autoimmune disease damaging the eye tear ducts and other glands.
• Sleep disorders: Any disorder that affects ones sleep
• Sleep disturbance: Sleeping difficulty, called insomnia, can involve difficulty falling asleep when you first go to bed at night, waking up too early in the morning, and waking up often during the night.
• Sleep disturbance related fibromyalgia: Sleep disturbance related fibromyalgia refers to fibromyalgia that is associated with sleep disturbance. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized mainly by pain mainly in the muscles which involves no associated damage to the tissues.
• Somatoform Disorders: A disorder that is characterised by multiple somatic complaints
• Spinal stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal cavity around the spinal cord.
• Stress: Emotional stress (sometimes refers to physical stress)
• Teeth grinding: Grinding teeth when asleep
• Thyroid disorders: Any disorder of the thyroid gland.
• Trichinosis: Worm infection usually caught from pigs
• Tuberculosis: Bacterial infection causing nodules forming, most commonly in the lung.
• Viral diseases: Any disease that is caused by a virus
