Glossary for Fungal meningitis

  • Acute meningitis: Acute meningitis is a form of meningitis caused by bacteria that normally lives in the mouth and throat. When the immune system is unable to supress this bacteria, it travels to the cerebrospinal spinal fluid in the brain. From there it affects the membranes surrounding the brain.
  • Blurred vision: Blurriness of vision or images.
  • Brain damage: Damage to the brain from various causes
  • Brain infection: Infection of the brain including encephalitis
  • Candidiasis: Fungal infection of moist areas such as mouth or vagina
  • Confusion: Mental confusion and impaired thinking.
  • Cryptococcosis: A fungal infection caused by Cryptococcus neoformans which primarily affects the central nervous system and the lungs. People with weakened immune systems such as AIDS sufferers are generally more susceptible to this type of infection.
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Dehydration: Loss of fluids in the body
  • Difficulty talking: Where ones has a problem with communicating through speech
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Irritability: Excessive feelings of annoyance or frustration.
  • Jequier-Deonna Syndrome: A very rare condition described in two sisters. It is characterized by vision and hearing problems and incoordination.
  • Learning disabilities: Various developmental problems impairing learning or schooling.
  • Meningitis: Dangerous infection of the membranes surrounding the brain.
  • Nuchal rigidity: neck stiffness
  • Paralysis: The loss of motor function due to dysfunction of the spinal cord
  • Photophobia: An exaggerated or irrational fear of light.
  • Seizures - intellectual deficit due to hydroxylysinuria: A rare syndrome characterized by mental retardation, seizures and high levels of hydroxylysine in the urine.
  • Stiff neck: Reduced mobility of the neck
  • Tiredness: Feeling tired either physically or mentally
  • Tuberculous meningitis: Tuberculous meningitis is an infection of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord caused by Koch's bacillus.
  • Vomiting: Vomiting or retching symptoms.
