Introduction: Ectopic Pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a woman's fertilized egg implants in any tissue other then the lining of the uterus. Ectopic pregnancies happen most often in the fallopian tube, but a fertilized egg might also implant in the abdomen, ovary, or on the cervix. An ectopic pregnancy in the fallopian tube is commonly known as a tubal pregnancy.

A fertilized egg that has implanted in tissues outside the uterus generally will cause severe tissue damage as it grows and tries to establish a blood supply. An ectopic pregnancy is a life-threatening emergency and must be treated promptly with surgery to avoid hemorrhage and critical blood loss. Women who have had pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, multiple sexual partners, a previous ectopic pregnancy, or are smokers are at greater risk for developing an ectopic pregnancy. In addition, a history of tubal ligation or surgery on the fallopian tubes increases the likelihood of ectopic pregnancy. Symptoms of ectopic pregnancy include abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding.
