Glossary for Genital herpes

  • AIDS: A term given to HIV patients who have a low CD4 count (below 200) which means that they have low levels of a type of immune cell called T-cells. AIDS patients tend to develop opportunistic infections and cancers. Opportunistic infections are infections that would not normally affect a person with a healthy immune system. The HIV virus is a virus that attacks the body's immune system.
  • Adolescent conditions: Symptoms that are evident due to puberty
  • Behcet's Disease: Recurring inflammation of small blood vessels affecting various areas.
  • Birth symptoms: Symptoms related to childbirth.
  • Blisters: Blistering of the skin.
  • Bullous Pemphigoid: A chronic skin disorder characterized blistering of the skin which usually occurs on the joints, abdomen, armpit and groin areas.
  • Candidiasis: Fungal infection of moist areas such as mouth or vagina
  • Canker sores: Ulcers of the mouth or nearby areas
  • Cervicitis: Inflammation of the cervix
  • Chancroid: An sexually transmitted disease caused by the Haemophilus ducreyi bacteria and is characterized by painful genital ulceration.
  • Chlamydia: Common sexually transmitted disease often without symptoms.
  • Cold sores: Skin cores on the skin, face, or lips.
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Diseases contagious from anal sex: Diseases that are contagious from the act of anal sex
  • Diseases contagious from oral sex: Diseases that can be contracted through oral sex
  • Diseases contagious from sex: Diseases that can be contracted through sexual contact
  • Diseases contagious from vaginal sex: Diseases that can be contracted through the act of vaginal sex
  • Erythema multiforme: An allergic inflammatory skin disorder which has a variety of causes and results in skin and mucous membrane lesions that affect mainly the hands, forearms, feet, mouth nose and genitals.
  • Genital ulcer: The occurrence of an ulcer located on the genitals
  • Genital wart: Skin warts in the genital regions.
  • Genital warts: Genital warts often from a viral STD.
  • Gonorrhea: Common sexually transmitted disease often without symptoms.
  • Granuloma inguinale: Granulomous disease spread sexually.
  • HIV/AIDS: HIV is a sexually transmitted virus and AIDS is the progressive immune failure that HIV causes.
  • Herpangina: A condition which is infective and caused by the coxsackie virus
  • Herpes: Virus with one subtype causing cold sores and another causing genital herpes.
  • Impetigo: Contagious skin rash from bacteria
  • Injury: Any damage inflicted in the body
  • Interstitial cystitis: A rare condition involving inflammatory disease of the bladder which progresses slowly.
  • Lichen sclerosis: Disease causing leathery or dry skin in genital areas.
  • Lupus: Autoimmune disease with numerous effects on various organs and linings.
  • Lymphogranuloma venereum: Type of chlamydia (sexually transmitted disease)
  • Male sexual conditions: Any condition that affects the ability of a male to have sexual relations
  • Molluscum contagiosum: Common wart-causing virus.
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Infection of the womb and fallopian tubes.
  • Pemphigus: A rare group of autoimmune skin disorders where blisters or raw sores develop on the skin and mucous membranes. The bodies immune system destroys proteins the hold skin cells together resulting in blistering. The condition can be life-threatening if untreated.
  • Penile sores: A lesion present on the penis.
  • Premature Birth: Early delivery of a fetus (before 37th week).
  • Reactive arthritis: The inflammation of a joint
  • Scabies: Mite infection of the skin common in institutions.
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Various diseases spread by sexual contact.
  • Shingles: Infectious viral infection occuring years after chickenpox infection.
  • Sick: Feeling ill or off color
  • Skin bumps: Bumps or lumps on the skin.
  • Sores: Sores affecting the skin.
  • Squamous Cell Skin Cancer: Aggressive skin cancer arising due to sun exposure; lesions are locally invasive to surrounding tissues and may metastasise
  • Stress: Emotional stress (sometimes refers to physical stress)
  • Syphilis: A sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacteria (Treponema pallidum). The condition is often asymptomatic in the early stages but one or more sores may be present in the early stages. Untreated syphilis usually results in remission of visible symptoms but further severe damage may occur to internal organs and other body tissues which can result in death.
  • Under-diagnosed conditions: Any medical condition that is undiagnosed
  • Vagina conditions: Any condition that affects the female vagina
  • Vaginal symptoms: Symptoms related to the vagina
  • Varicella - Teratogenic Agent: There is strong evidence to indicate that the development of Varicella during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Viral diseases: Any disease that is caused by a virus
