Warts are caused by infection with the human papillomavirus, a group of ether-resistant, deoxyribonucleic acid-containing papovaviruses. Mode of transmission is probably through direct contact, but autoinoculation is possible.
Although their incidence is highest in children and young adults, warts may occur at any age.

The term 'prevalence' of Genital warts usually refers to the estimated population of people who are managing Genital warts at any given time. The term 'incidence' of Genital warts refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of Genital warts diagnosed each year. Hence, these two statistics types can differ: a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence, but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence.
