Gestational diabetes
Introduction: Gestational diabetes
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a form of diabetes that occurs in pregnant women. It usually causes only mild symptoms similar to those of early Type 2 diabetes, and is thus often only diagnosed by specific screening in the 24th-28th week of pregnancy; some cases sadly remain undiagnosed. GDM can cause serious complications for the baby and the mother, so early diagnosis and ongoing treatment is important for a good outcome.

Article Excerpts about Gestational diabetes
Diabetes Overview: NIDDK (Excerpt)
Gestational diabetes develops only during pregnancy. Like type 2 diabetes, it occurs more often in African Americans, American Indians, Hispanic Americans, and people with a family history of diabetes. Though it usually disappears after delivery, the mother is at increased risk of getting type 2 diabetes later in life. (Source: excerpt from Diabetes Overview: NIDDK)
Am I at Risk for Type 2 Diabetes: NIDDK (Excerpt)
Some women develop gestational diabetes during the late stages of pregnancy. Although this form of diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born, a woman who has had it is more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life. Gestational diabetes is caused by the hormones of pregnancy or a shortage of insulin. (Source: excerpt from Am I at Risk for Type 2 Diabetes: NIDDK)
Definitions of Gestational diabetes:
Glucose intolerance which onsets during pregnancy; does not include diabetics who become pregnant or women who become lactosuric; after pregnancy, the woman is reclassified as diabetic or not depending on whether glucose intolerance persists. - (Source - Diseases Database)
