Glossary for Glomerular Disease

  • Acute Renal Failure: Syndrome characterised by rapid decline in kidney function with accumulation of waste products in the blood, occurring over a period of days to weeks
  • Acute urinary conditions: An acute condition that occurs in the urinary system
  • Alport Syndrome: A rare hereditary disorder involving the progressive deterioration of parts of the kidney resulting in chronic kidney disease.
  • Bacterial endocarditis: Infection and inflammation of the inner layers of the heart, most commonly the valves cause by bacteria.
  • Blood in urine: Blood or blood-like discoloration of urine.
  • Chronic Kidney Disease: Long-term and generally irreversible disease of the kidneys due to infection, obstruction, congenital diseases or generalised diseases causing failure of the kidneys' normal functions.
  • Dark urine: A dark discolouration of the urine.
  • Diabetic Nephropathy: Kidney disease from diabetic blood sugars.
  • End-stage renal disease: Final stage of total kidney failure.
  • Glomerulonephritis: Kidney disease where the kidney's have problems removing waste material and excessive fluid.
  • Glomerulosclerosis: A condition which results in the fibrosis and scarring of the renal glomeruli
  • Goodpasture syndrome: A rare disease involving inflammation of membranes in the lung and kidneys.
  • Hepatitis B: Viral liver infection spread by sex or body fluids.
  • Hepatitis C: Viral liver infection spread by blood.
  • Idiopathic minimal change nephrotic syndrome: A rare kidney disorder which has no apparent cause. The filtering structures of the kidneys are only slightly damaged and appear to be almost normal. Progression to kidney failure is very rare.
  • IgA nephropathy: A rare disorder where kidney inflammation leads to a build up of the antibody (IgA) in the kidney which results in the characteristic symptom of blood in the urine.
  • Impetigo: Contagious skin rash from bacteria
  • Kidney conditions: Any condition affecting the kidney organs.
  • Lupus nephritis: Kidney damage caused by lupus.
  • Nephrotic syndrome: Various kidney glomeruli conditions
  • Pink urine: The occurrence of urine which is of a pink colour
  • Post streptococcal glomerulonephritis: Kidney complication (glomerulonephritis) following streptococcal infection
  • Proteinuria: Protein in the urine
  • Strep throat: Streptococcal bacterial throat infection.
  • Swelling symptoms: Symptoms causing swelling or enlargement.
  • Syphilis: A sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacteria (Treponema pallidum). The condition is often asymptomatic in the early stages but one or more sores may be present in the early stages. Untreated syphilis usually results in remission of visible symptoms but further severe damage may occur to internal organs and other body tissues which can result in death.
  • Urinary symptoms: Symptoms affecting urination or related organs.
  • Urine color changes: Any change to the color of urine.
