Glossary for Glossitis

  • Alcohol - Teratogenic Agent: There is strong evidence to indicate that exposure to Alcohol during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Alcohol abuse: Excessive use of alcohol ranging from binge drinking to severe alcoholism
  • Allergic reaction: An acute reaction through exposure to a particular allergen
  • Anemia: Reduced ability of blood to carry oxygen from various possible causes.
  • Dana syndrome: A rare inherited disorder characterized by the gradual degeneration of the white matter of the spinal cord and pernicious anemia. Various neurological symptoms can result.
  • Dehydration: Loss of fluids in the body
  • Erythema multiforme: An allergic inflammatory skin disorder which has a variety of causes and results in skin and mucous membrane lesions that affect mainly the hands, forearms, feet, mouth nose and genitals.
  • Folate deficiency: Inadequate consumption of folic acid to meet the body's needs. Folic acid is a naturally occurring vitamin found in green leafy vegetables, liver, yeast and mushrooms. Alcohol and excessive cooking can affect folic acid absorption. Some medications may also cause folic acid deficiency. Folate deficiency during pregnancy can result in neural tube defects in the infant.
  • Food allergies: Immune over-reaction to an eaten food.
  • Geographic Tongue: A form of tongue inflammation where smooth, migrating patches form on the tongue.
  • Glucagonoma: Rare cancer of the glucagon-producing pancreas cells.
  • Infection: Infections as a symptom.
  • Injury: Any damage inflicted in the body
  • Iron deficiency: When there is a deficiency of iron in the body
  • Lichen planus: Skin rash
  • Nutritional deficiency: Any deficiency of the nutrients that are required to sustain human life
  • Pellagra: Dietary deficiency of vitamin B3 (niacin)
  • Pemphigus Vulgaris: A severe autoimmune skin disease characterized by blistering of the skin including the mucous membranes inside the mouth and esophagus.
  • Pernicious anemia: Pernicious anemia is a blood disorder where the body is unable to use it properly use Vitamin B12 to make red blood cells.
  • Plummer-Vinson syndrome: A rare condition characterized by iron-deficiency anemia, nail abnormalities and dysphagia.
  • Psoriasis: Chronic skin rash condition, usually red or silver and blistery.
  • Red tongue: Redness or inflammation of the tongue
  • Riboflavin deficiency: Dietary deficiency of riboflavin (vitamin B2)
  • Smoking: The smoking of cigarettes
  • Sore tongue: Pain or soreness of the tongue
  • Swollen tongue: Swelling affecting the tongue
  • Thiamine deficiency: Dietary deficiency of vitamin B1 (thiamine)
  • Tongue Conditions: Any condition that affects the tongue
  • Vitamin B deficiency: When there is a deficiency of vitamin B in the body
  • Vitamin B12 Deficiency: A deficiency of Vitamin B12 primarily causes anemias the body is unable to make sufficient quantities of normal red blood cells. Severe cases can lead to permanent nervous system problems. The vitamin B12 deficiency can result from absorption problems, insufficient dietary intake, certain medications (e.g. metformin), inherited conditions (e.g. transcobalamin deficiency) and certain chronic parasitic intestinal infestations.
  • Vitamin E deficiency: Deficiency of Vitamin E
  • Zinc deficiency: When there is a deficiency of zinc in an individuals body
