Medical Research Breakthroughs and Graves Disease
New Genetic possibilities in Psoriasis: Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease wherein the skin is attacked by ones
own immune system. Patients with psoriasis
commonly develop
psoriatic arthritis which is a painful and debilitating arthritic
condition
additionally characterized by pitting or complete loss of fingernails.
Many factors are involved in this condition and is very complex at the
genetic level. Research has shown that a few but common DNA differences
are important in the development of
psoriasis. Although each variation makes only a small
contribution to the disease, patients usually have a number of
different genetic variations that increases their risk of psoriasis and
psoriatic arthritis. Recent new studies have shown that seven new sites
of common DNA variation have been discovered that
increase the risk of psoriasis. Some of these variations, in one area
of the genome, link psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis to other
autoimmune disorders. The study showed that the DNA variations that
were located on chromosome 4 were
strongly linked to psoriatic arthritis. These variations were also
associated with type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Grave's disease
and celiac disease. These variations convey that different
biological pathways could be responsible for psoriasis on a basic level.
This study may lead to new targeted drugs and treatments that
attack specific pathways.
