Glossary for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

  • Addison's Disease: A rare progressive hormonal disorder characterized by insufficient production of certain hormones called adrenal corticosteroids.
  • Autoimmune diseases: A group of disorders in which the primary cause is the an inflammatory reaction caused by the body's own immune system attacking tissues
  • Autoimmune disorders - Teratogenic Agent: There is strong evidence to indicate that the development of autoimmune disorders during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Autoimmune thyroid diseases: Autoimmune diseases of the thyroid gland.
  • Bulging eyes: Bulging or protruding eyes
  • Cognitive impairment: General loss of mental or cognitive ability
  • Depression: Various syndromes with excessive anxiety, phobias, or fear.
  • Goiter: Swollen neck thyroid gland
  • Heart failure: Slow failure of the heart (cardiac insufficiency).
  • Hyperthyroidism: Too much thyroid hormone production.
  • Hypothyroidism: Too little thyroid hormone production.
  • Levothyroxine - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Levothyroxine during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Lymphoma: Cancer involving lymph nodes and the immune system.
  • Menstrual conditions: Any condition that is associated with the female menstrual cycle
  • Miscarriage: Loss of fetus without human interference
  • Neck lump: Lump in the neck area
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Polyendocrine deficiency syndrome: Various rare syndromes causing multiple gland-attacking autoimmune diseases.
  • Riedel syndrome: A rare condition that occurs when fibrous tissue forms in the thyroid area and progressively destroys the thyroid gland.
  • Sexual Conditions: Any condition that affects sexual function
  • Subacute Thyroiditis: A self-limiting, virally induced inflammation of the thyroid characterised by a febrile illness and swelling of the thyroid, with subsequent damage to the thyroid tissue causing leakage of thyroid hormones into the circulation
  • Thyroid disorders: Any disorder of the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroid symptoms: Symptoms affecting the thyroid gland
  • Thyroiditis: Thyroid gland inflammation
  • Type 1 diabetes: Severe insulin-treated diabetes typically occurring in young people.
  • Under-diagnosed conditions: Any medical condition that is undiagnosed
