Hemoglobinopathy: A disease of the blood characterized by abnormal hemoglobin in the blood. The abnormality usually arises from a genetic defect which results in the hemoglobin have an abnormal structure. Sickle-cell disease and thalassemia are examples of hemoglobinopathies.
