Glossary for Herpes zoster oticus

  • Dry eye: Dry eyes or gritty eye feeling.
  • Dry mouth: A condition characterized by the sensation of a dry mouth
  • Ear conditions: Any condition that affects the ear
  • Facial paralysis: A usually temporary facial nerve disorder where a part or all of the face becomes suddenly paralysed.
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Hearing impairment: Reduced ability to hear sounds.
  • Hearing loss: A very rare condition described in two sisters. It is characterized by vision and hearing problems and incoordination.
  • Loss of taste: Losing the sense of taste
  • Myoclonus: Sudden involuntary muscle twitching or movement.
  • Nystagmus: Involuntary jerky eye movements
  • Postherpetic neuralgia: A condition which is characterized by persistent burning pain and hyperesthesia along the distribution of a cutaneous nerve
  • Ramsay Hunt syndrome: Facial paralysis with a vesicular eruption
  • Sensorineural hearing loss: Hearing loss due to abnormal functioning or damage to the hearing nerve or the cochlea (inner ear) or the part of the brain that processes sound. The hearing problem may be present at birth or may be acquired through such things as aging, excessive noise or diseases such as meningitis.
  • Shingles: Infectious viral infection occuring years after chickenpox infection.
  • Tinnitus: Hearing noises in the ears: ringing, roaring, clicks, whistling, or hissing.
  • Vertigo: The odd balance sensation of inappropriate spinning or movement of the environment
