Glossary for Hiatal hernia

  • Abdominal Injuries: Any injury involving the abdomen. Injuries may penetrating or caused by a fall or blow to the abdomen. Symptoms are variable depending on the nature of the injury.
  • Abdominal discomfort: The sensation of discomfort located in the abdomen
  • Aicardi syndrome: A rare genetic disorder where the structure connecting the two halves of the brain fails to develop which results in seizures and eye abnormalities .
  • Barrett's esophagus: Damage to the cells lining the esophagus usually from refluxed acid.
  • Belching: The release of gas from the digestive tract through the mouth.
  • Chronic cough: The chronic noisy sudden expulsion of air from the respiratory tract
  • Cocaine abuse: Stimulant drug with various effects
  • Congenital malformations: Physical body or organ malformations existing at birth
  • Constipation: Difficult or dry bowel movements
  • Cough: The noise produced from the sudden expulsion of air from the lungs
  • Esophagitis: Inflammation of the esophagus
  • Focal dermal hypoplasia: A rare genetic disorder characterized by bone, skin, teeth and pigmentation abnormalities as well as asymmetry of the face, trunk ant extremities.
  • Galloway syndrome: A rare genetic disorder primarily involving physical and developmental abnormalities.
  • Gallstones: Stone-like deposits in the gall bladder.
  • Gastritis: Inflammation of the stomach lining
  • Gastrocutaneous syndrome: A arare inherited disorder characterized by peptic ulcers, hiatus hernia, eye abnormalities and skin pigmentation.
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: Repeated reflux of stomach acid into the throat.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux: Is referred to as the reflux of contents of the duodenum and stomach into the oesophagus
  • Heartburn: Pain from stomach acid coming back up the esophagus
  • Hernia: General term for an organ protruding where it should not.
  • Hiatal hernia: Hernia of the stomach through the diaphragm muscle.
  • Meal symptoms: Symptoms related to meals.
  • Microcephaly, hiatal hernia and nephrotic syndrome: A rare genetic disorder primarily involving physical and developmental abnormalities as well as kidney disease.
  • Nephrosis neuronal dysmigration Syndrome: A rare genetic disorder primarily involving physical and developmental abnormalities as well as kidney disease. The type and severity of symptoms that can occur is variable.
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Obesity: An increase in the body weight greater than that required for normal function that is characterised by the accumulation of excessive fat
  • Pregnancy: The condition of supporting a fetus from conception till birth.
  • Reflux: Rising stomach acid up the esophagus
  • Regurgitation: The backflow of stomach contents and gas from stomach back into oesophagus or mouth
  • Rett-like syndrome: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by
  • Sandifer syndrome: A rare disorder where torticollis (neck spasms) is associated with a hiatus hernia. All the symptoms seem to be as a result of the hiatus hernia.
  • Schatzki ring: Ring-like constriction of the lower part of the esophagus which can cause swallowing problems.
  • Smoking: The smoking of cigarettes
  • Spastic paraplegia 29, autosomal dominant: A rare genetic disorder characterized mainly by progressive spasticity and weakness of the lower legs. The arms may also be affected in some cases.
  • Stiff baby syndrome: A rare inherited neurological disorder characterized by increased muscle tone during infancy and an exaggerated startle response later in life.
  • Stomach Conditions: Any condition that affects a persons stomach
  • Stress: Emotional stress (sometimes refers to physical stress)
  • Weight loss: Loss of body weight.
