Glossary for Hodgkin's Disease

  • Bone cancer: Malignancy that occurs in the bone
  • Breast Cancer: Cancer of the breast.
  • Cancer: Abnormal overgrowth of body cells.
  • Cat scratch disease: An infectious disease transmitted through a cat's bite, scratch or lick and resulting primarily in lymph node pain and swelling. The condition can be mild or severe.
  • Cervical lymphadenopathy: The enlargement of the cervical lymph nodes
  • Colorectal cancer: Cancer of the colon (bowel) or rectum.
  • Edema: Fluid retention in tissues
  • Eosinophilia: This is when there is an abnormal increase in the eosinophils in the blood
  • FUO: Fevers that occur for no apparent reason. The fever involves temperatures of greater than 38.3 degrees Celsius which occurs sporadically for more than three weeks. Infection and cancers are the most common causes of this type of fever.
  • Flu: Very common viral respiratory infection.
  • Fractures: Fracture of a bone; also "broken bone".
  • Glomerulonephritis: Kidney disease where the kidney's have problems removing waste material and excessive fluid.
  • Graft-versus-host disease: A disease characterised by an immune response as a result of a transplantation or transfusion resulting in a widespread systemic inflammatory response
  • Groin swelling: Swelling in the groin joint area
  • HIV/AIDS: HIV is a sexually transmitted virus and AIDS is the progressive immune failure that HIV causes.
  • Hirschsprung's disease: A rare condition where abnormalities in the bowel muscles prevent it from contracting normally and pushing the fecal matter through which results in obstruction and dilation of the bowel.
  • Hodgkin's Disease: A form of cancer that affects the lymphatic system.
  • Immune deficiency conditions: Any of various diseases that suppress the immune system.
  • Immune disorders: Disorders that affect the immune system
  • Immunoproliferative diseases: Diseases characterised by proliferation of the lymphoid cells
  • Jaundice: Bile or liver problem causing yellowness.
  • Leuconychia: A white discoloration of the nails.
  • Leukemia: Cancer of the blood cells, usually white blood cells.
  • Lung cancer: Lung cancer is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. This growth may lead to metastasis, which is the invasion of adjacent tissue and infiltration beyond the lungs. Most lung tumors are malignant.
  • Metastatic cancer: Any cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
  • Multiple Myeloma: A rare malignant cancer that occurs in the bone marrow. More common in skull, spine, rib cage, pelvis and legs.
  • Myelofibrosis: A rare condition where progressive scarring or fibrosis of the bone marrow impairs it's ability to make blood cells causing symptoms such as anemia and liver and spleen enlargement.
  • Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma: A type of lymphoma, a cancer affecting lymph nodes and the immune system.
  • Occupational Cancer - Hodgkin's lymphoma: Occupational exposure to wood dust can increase the risk of developing Hodgkin's lymphoma.
  • Pain: A feeling of suffering, agony, distress caused by the stimulation of pain fibres in the nervous system
  • Pruritus: The sensation of itch
  • Sarcoidosis: Rare autoimmune disease usually affecting the lungs.
  • Shingles: Infectious viral infection occuring years after chickenpox infection.
  • Swelling symptoms: Symptoms causing swelling or enlargement.
  • Swollen lymph nodes: Swelling or enlargement of the lymph nodes
  • Swollen neck lymph nodes: Swollen lymph nodes in the neck region
  • Thyroid cancer: Cancer of the thyroid gland.
