Glossary for Hookworm

  • Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis: An allergic reaction to a particular fungus called Aspergillus.
  • Ancylostoma duodenale: An infestation with Ancylostoma duodenale which is a parasitic hookwork whichcan cause serious disease in humans - usually occurs in people who work barefoot in damp soil. The hookworms suck blood from the intestines of the host which can result in anemia if there is a large number of worms.
  • Anemia: Reduced ability of blood to carry oxygen from various possible causes.
  • Angina: A special type of chest pain.
  • Ascariasis: Large intestinal roundworm from 6 to 13 inches.
  • Coughing: The noise produced from the sudden expulsion of air from the lungs
  • Cutaneous larva migrans: A condition due to prolonged migration of nematode larvae in the skin
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Diseases contagious from contaminated water: Diseases that can be contracted from contaminated water
  • Foot itch: Itchy feeling of the foot
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding: Internal bleeding in the digestive tract
  • Hookworm: Worm spread through feces with poor sanitation.
  • Iron deficiency: When there is a deficiency of iron in the body
  • Lung symptoms: Symptoms affecting one or both lungs.
  • Paragonimiasis: Infection by a parasitic worm, Paragonimus westermani, which are a type of lung fluke which invade the lungs, and sometimes other organs, where they cause problems. Occasionally the parasites infect the brain which can occasionally result in death. Infection occurs through eating freshwater crabs and crayfish which have not been cooked sufficiently.
  • Roundworm: A worm of the class nematode
  • Strongyloidiasis: A parasitic infectious disease involving the intestines and caused by the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis. Infection usually occurs in crowded, unsanitized populations.
  • Tapeworms: Parasitic worm infestation of digestive or other organs.
  • Tuberculosis: Bacterial infection causing nodules forming, most commonly in the lung.
  • Wheezing: A whistling like continuous sound that is caused by the respiratory system
  • Whipworm: Any nematode of the genus trichuris
  • Worm conditions: Any condition that is caused by infestation of worms
