Glossary for Huntington's Disease

  • Alzheimer's Disease: Dementia-causing brain disease mostly in seniors and the elderly.
  • Apathy: When an individual has a lack of feeling and emotion
  • Benign hereditary chorea:
  • Bipolar disorder: Cycles of mania and depression; commonly called "manic-depression".
  • Brain conditions: Medical conditions that affect the brain
  • Choking: Sensation of blockage or inability to breathe.
  • Chorea: Any disorder causing involuntary movement or spasms.
  • Choreoathetosis: Choreoathetosis is the occurrence of involuntary movements in a combination of chorea and athetosis.
  • Cognitive impairment: General loss of mental or cognitive ability
  • Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease: A very rare degenerative brain disease that can be inherited, transmitted (eg in surgical transplants using infected tissue) or as a result of genetic mutations. The condition is fatal.
  • Dementia: Various mental impairment conditions.
  • Depression: Various syndromes with excessive anxiety, phobias, or fear.
  • Depressive symptoms: Inappropriate depressed mood.
  • Hirschsprung's disease: A rare condition where abnormalities in the bowel muscles prevent it from contracting normally and pushing the fecal matter through which results in obstruction and dilation of the bowel.
  • Huntington's Disease: Inherited disease causing progressive mental deterioration.
  • Incontinence: The loss of control of ones bowel and or bladder function
  • Involuntary movements: The involuntary movement of the musculoskeletal system
  • Irritability: Excessive feelings of annoyance or frustration.
  • Mood swings: Excessive and exaggerated alterations in mood.
  • Parkinson's Disease: Degenerative brain condition characterised by tremor.
  • Possibly Autoimmune Diseases: Diseases that may be autoimmune or have an autoimmune subtype, but it is unclear or controversial.
  • Prion disease: A rare group of diseases that progressively impair brain and nervous system functioning. They may be caused by genetic mutations, occur for no obvious reason or may be transmitted through exposure to animals or people contaminated with prions e.g. eating contaminated beef can cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
  • Psychiatric disorders: Any condition that affects ones mind
  • Schizophrenia: Psychiatric disorder with delusional beliefs and hallucinations.
  • Swallowing difficulty: Difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • Sydenham chorea: Brain disease causing involuntary movements or spasms.
  • Triplet Repeat Genetic Disorders: A disorder that is characterised by the repeat of a triplet sequence in the genetic sequence
  • Wilson's Disease: Wilson disease, or hepatolenticular degeneration, is a neurodegenerative disease of copper metabolism.
