Glossary for Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar Nonketotic Syndrome

  • Cardiomyopathy: Any disease of the heart muscle
  • Dehydration: Loss of fluids in the body
  • Diabetes: Failing or reduced ability of the body to handle sugars.
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis: Life-threatening complication of high blood sugars and diabetes.
  • Frequent urination: Urinating more often than normal
  • High blood sugar: High levels of glucose in the blood
  • Hyperglycemia: High levels of glucose in the blood
  • Kidney Dialysis: The process by which toxic compounds from the blood are removed
  • Obesity: An increase in the body weight greater than that required for normal function that is characterised by the accumulation of excessive fat
  • Polyuria: Excessive urination during pregnancy.
  • Thirst: Inappropriate excessive thirst.
  • Type 1 diabetes: Severe insulin-treated diabetes typically occurring in young people.
  • Type 2 diabetes: Most common diabetes in adults, usually progressing slowly, mostly treated without insulin at diagnosis.
