Glossary for Hypopituitarism

  • Addison's Disease: A rare progressive hormonal disorder characterized by insufficient production of certain hormones called adrenal corticosteroids.
  • Alopecia: Various types of hair loss or balding
  • Anorexia: Any type of appetite loss; often refers to anorexia nervosa
  • Anorexia Nervosa: A disorder where a distorted sense of body image leads to self-starvation to the point of death in some cases.
  • Arthrogryposis, distal, with hypopituitarism, mental retardation, and facial anomalies: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by mental retardation, permanent flexion of fingers, low pituitary hormone level and facial anomalies.
  • Babinski-Froelich Syndrome: A rare condition where an endocrine abnormality (caused by such things as a pituitary tumor or damage to the hypothalamus) affects hormone levels which results in a variety of symptoms.
  • Cachexia: physical wasting with loss of weight and muscle mass caused by disease
  • Chordoma: Chordomas are rare tumors that arise from embryonic notochordal remnants along the length of the neuraxis at developmentally active sites. These sites are the ends of the neuraxis and the vertebral bodies.
  • Corpus callosum dysgenesis hypopituitarism: A rare syndrome characterized by abnormal development of the part of the brain called the corpus callosum which separates the two halves of the brain as well as underdeveloped pituitary gland.
  • Cystic Fibrosis: Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disease affecting the exocrine (mucus) glands of the lungs, liver, pancreas, and intestines, causing progressive disability due to multisystem failure.
  • Decreased libido: Decreased libido is a reduction in the sex drive
  • Delayed puberty: A lack of sexual maturation in an adolescent at an age significantly higher than the average age that child of that epidemiology attains puberty.
  • Depression: Various syndromes with excessive anxiety, phobias, or fear.
  • Empty Sella Syndrome: Congenital defect of the brain.
  • Encephalitis: Dangerous infection of the brain
  • Ependymoma: A tumor that occurs in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Symptoms vary according to the aggressiveness, size and exact location of the tumor.
  • Female infertility: Infertility that affects the female
  • Fibromyalgia: A difficult to diagnose condition affecting the muscles and/or joints
  • Froehlich syndrome: A rare condition where an endocrine abnormality (caused by such things as a pituitary tumor or damage to the hypothalamus) affects hormone levels which results in a variety of symptoms.
  • Froelich's syndrome: A rare condition where an endocrine abnormality (caused by such things as a pituitary tumor or damage to the hypothalamus) affects hormone levels which results in a variety of symptoms.
  • Frolich's syndrome: A rare condition where an endocrine abnormality (caused by such things as a pituitary tumor or damage to the hypothalamus) affects hormone levels which results in a variety of symptoms.
  • Frölich's syndrome: A rare syndrome where damage to the hypothalamus impairs the activity of the pituitary gland resulting in obesity, sluggishness and delayed puberty.
  • Gigantism: A rare endocrine disorder where excess growth hormone is produced prior to puberty.
  • Granulomatous hypophysitis: A rare disorder caused by the inflammation of the pituitary gland. It can occur as a result of other infections such as tuberculosis and sarcoidosis.
  • Head injury: An injury to the head
  • Hemochromatosis: Excess of iron leading to problems with joints, liver, heart and pancreas.
  • Holoprosencephaly: A rare disorder where abnormalities of the fetal forebrain development lead to various birth defects.
  • Hyponatraemia: Hyponatraemia means there is a lower than normal concentration of sodium in the blood.
  • Hypothalamic hamartomas: A benign congenital tumor that develops on or near the hypothalamus.
  • Hypothyroidism: Too little thyroid hormone production.
  • Impotence: Inability to attain or sustain an erection.
  • Infertility: Inability of couples to establish pregnancy by having sexual intercourse over a period of time, usually more than 1 year in length.
  • Klinefelter syndrome: A genetic condition where males have at least one extra X chromosome or extra copies of both the X and Y chromosomes in each cell. Normally male cells contain one X and one Y chromosome in each cell. The condition is not inherited but is a result of problems during cell division. Klinefelter syndrome variants is a more severe form of the condition as it involves more than one extra X or X and Y chromosome in each cell.
  • Lethargy: feeling of tiredness
  • Male infertility: The inability of the male to reproduce
  • Meningioma: A slow-growing tumor of the meninges that is not cancerous. Symptoms are determined by the size and location of the tumor.
  • Meningitis: Dangerous infection of the membranes surrounding the brain.
  • Neurosarcoidosis: A rare disorder involving sarcoidosis of the nervous system. Sarcoidosis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect virtually any part of the body. Neurosarcoidosis involves inflammation and abnormal deposits in parts of the nervous system including the brain and spinal cord which affects their functioning. Symptoms may be sudden and severe or may be mild and progress slowly. Symptoms are determined by the degree of nerve involvement.
  • Pallister-Hall Syndrome: A rare genetic disorder characterized by hypothalamic hamartoblastoma, hypopituitarism, imperforate anus and polydactyly.
  • Pituitary conditions: Any condition that affects the pituitary
  • RHYNS syndrome: A rare syndrome characterized by eye, kidney and skeletal abnormalities as well as hypopituitarism.
  • Septo-Optic Dysplasia: A rare birth defect characterized by impaired vision and pituitary deficiency.
  • Tiredness: Feeling tired either physically or mentally
