Glossary for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

  • Asbestosis: Lung condition from asbestos exposure
  • Breathing difficulties: Various types of breathing difficulty (dyspnea).
  • Bronchiectasis: Chronic bronchiole dilation from secretions and blockages.
  • Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia: Inflammation of lung tissue (bronchioles and surrounding tissue) which may occur on its own or as a result of other conditions such as certain infections.
  • Bronchitis: Bronchitis is an inflammation of the air passages within the lungs. It occurs when the trachea and the large and small bronchi within the lungs become inflamed
  • Clubbing: The proliferation of soft tissue around the ends of fingers and toes
  • Cough: The noise produced from the sudden expulsion of air from the lungs
  • Cystic Fibrosis: Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disease affecting the exocrine (mucus) glands of the lungs, liver, pancreas, and intestines, causing progressive disability due to multisystem failure.
  • Dry cough: Dry non-productive cough without producing sputum
  • Exercise symptoms: Symptoms related to or triggered by exercise
  • Fibrosis: The formation of fibrous tissue
  • Hamman-Rich syndrome: A rare acute lung disease where the lung sufferers progressive inflammation and fibrosis which often leads to death.
  • Heart attack: Serious and often fatal acute heart condition
  • Hypersensitivity pneumonitis:
  • Hypoxemia: low oxygen levels in the arterial blood in the body
  • Interstitial lung disease: Any condition which affects the interstitium of the lungs
  • Lung conditions: Various conditions affecting the lungs or related airways.
  • Penicillamine - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Penicillamine during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Pneumoconiosis: A lung disease caused by breathing in coal dust. It often occurs in people employed in the coal industry. Generally symptoms stop once the exposure ceases.
  • Pulmonary embolism: Blocked lung blood vessel often from a blood clot.
  • Pulmonary fibrosis: A scarring condition that affects the lungs
  • Respiratory conditions: Any condition that affects the respiratory system
  • Respiratory failure: Failure of the respiratory system
  • Respiratory infections: Any infection that occurs to the respiratory system
  • Right heart failure: Heart failure of the right side of the heart
  • Sarcoidosis: Rare autoimmune disease usually affecting the lungs.
  • Scleroderma: A rare, progressive connective tissue disorder involving thickening and hardening of the skin and connective tissue. There are a number of forms of scleroderma with some forms being systemic (involving internal organs).
  • Shortness of breath: The feeling of being short of breath
  • Sputum: The phlegm like substance that is expelled from the bronchi, trachea, and lungs
  • Stroke: Serious brain event from bleeding or blood clots.
  • Tuberculosis: Bacterial infection causing nodules forming, most commonly in the lung.
