Glossary for Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Angioid streaks: Streaks that radiate out from the optic nerve head under the retina. The streaks may be red, brown or grey. The streaks resemble blood vessels and hence the term angioid. The streaks represent tiny breaks in the elastic membrane of the retina (Bruch's membrane). The anomaly is often associated with conditions such as Paget's disease, sickle cell anemia, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and pseudoxanthoma elasticum.
Autoimmune Hepatitis: Liver inflammation caused due to autoimmune processes where the body's immune system attacks the liver.
Autoimmune diseases: A group of disorders in which the primary cause is the an inflammatory reaction caused by the body's own immune system attacking tissues
Bleeding in the brain: A condition which is characterized by the abnormal loss of blood from blood vessels located in the brain
Bleeding symptoms: Any type of bleeding symptoms.
Blood conditions: Conditions that affect the blood
Bruising: Bleeding under skin leading to discoloration.
Clotting symptoms: Symptoms affecting the blood's ability to clot
Danazol - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Danazol (used to treat endometriosis) during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
Hemolytic uremic syndrome: A rare condition characterized by acute kidney failure, hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia (reduced blood platelet count). The condition is often caused by upper respiratory infections or infectious diarrhea.
Hemophilia: Blood disease usually genetic causing failure to clot.
Hemorrhage: Bleeding of any type (especially when referring to severe bleeding)
Henoch-Schönlein purpura: A form of vasculitis (blood vessel inflammation) that affects blood capillaries and affects mostly the skin, kidneys, joints and stomach.
Immune disorders: Disorders that affect the immune system
Leukemia: Cancer of the blood cells, usually white blood cells.
Lupus: Autoimmune disease with numerous effects on various organs and linings.
Metastatic cancer: Any cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
Mouth redness: Redness or red spots in the mouth
Pregnancy: The condition of supporting a fetus from conception till birth.
Purple skin: Purple or blue-purple coloring of the skin.
Purpura: Various bruising conditions where small blood vessels hemorrhage
Skin color changes: Skin changes such as redness, blueness, or whitening.
Thrombocytopenia: Decreased platelets in the blood
Thrombocytopenic purpura, autoimmune: A rare blood disorder where a low number of platelets impairs the bloods ability to clot and results in bleeding into the skin and mucous membranes.
