Glossary for Impulse Control Disorders

  • Aggression: Overly aggressive behavior.
  • Agitation: A state of increased tension with episodes of emotional and physical irritability.
  • Dermatillomania: A form of obsessive compulsive disorder where a person compulsively picks at their own skin. Sufferers can feel the pain they inflict on themselves but the feelings of gratification and stress relief prevent them from stopping. The severity and extent of damage to the skin is variable. Stress and anxiety can trigger the compulsive skin picking.
  • Gambling addiction: Addiction to gambling activities.
  • Intermittent Explosive Disorder: Episodes of explosively aggressive behavior
  • Kleptomania: Intense urge to steal. Usually kleptomaniacs have a near relative who suffers from a substance abuse disorder.
  • Mental illness: Any psychological syndrome
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder: Behavioral disorder with obsessive thoughts and compulsive acts.
  • Pyromania: Compulsive arson and fire starting behavior disorder
  • Trichotillomania: A mental disorder where a person feels compelled to pull out their own hair.
