Common Misdiagnoses and Infertility

Rare type of breast cancer without a lump: There is a less common form of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer. Its symptoms can be an inflammation of the breast tissue, such as with a breast rash with redness and warmth, but not necessarily a physical breast lump. This type of breast cancer should be considered as an uncommon possibility for certain types of breast symptoms.

Undiagnosed celiac disease in pregnancy harms fetus: The failure to diagnose the common but less known digestive disease celiac disease (see symptoms of celiac disease) is linked to adverse fetal outcomes. See misdiagnosis of celiac disease.

Misdiagnosed weight-related causes of infertility: A woman's weight status can affect her level of fertility. Although obesity or overweight can in themselves reduce fertility, there are other weight-related or associated medical conditions that further reduce fertility. Some of these hidden causes include COPD, diabetes, thyroid disorders (overactive thyroid or underactive thyroid) and metabolic syndrome. See also other causes of infertility.

Pelvic inflammtory disease due to STD's: Pelvic inflammory disease is a general term to describe an inflammation of the uterus and fallopian tubes. It occurs as a serious complication due to sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia and gonorrhea and occurs commonly in women of child bearing age. It can lead to serious consequences like infertilty and ectopic pregnancy.A woman can present with very vague symptoms such as mild abdominal pain, fever, unusual vaginal discharge and painful urination. The condition may be mistaken for urinary tract infection. Careful clinical assessment along with investigations like an ultrasound are helpful in coming to a prompt diagnosis.Test to identify the organisms leading to PID must also be done so that the correct antibiotics can be delivered.

Coarctation of aorta in Turner's syndrome: Turner syndrome is a sex chromosomal abnormality due to the presence of only one X chromosome occurring in newborn females. The genetic profile is 45 chromosomes of XO karyotype. It is characterized by retarded growth that leads to a small stature and frequent infertility. Turner syndrome is diagnosed on the basis of genetic analysis of chromosomes. This can be done prior to birth. Most individuals with Turner syndrome require female hormone therapy to promote development of secondary sexual characteristics and menstruation Most women with Turner syndrome can live relatively normal lives. The prognosis for a person with Turner syndrome is dependent on other conditions that may be present. Early surgical intervention is required to treat webbed neck. It is also important to differentiate Turners syndrome from Noonan's syndrome which has a few similar features. In Noonan's syndrome mental retardation is usually present and the cardiac lesion associated is pulmonary stenosis which is not the case in Turner's syndrome as mental retardation occurs very rarely and the main cardiac pathology involved is coarctation of aorta.

Subtle changes in hypothroidism can be missed: The early changes in hypothyroidism are subtle and can be misdiagnosed especially if only a single symptom is dominant. Hence the list of conditions from which it has to be differentiated from is endless. To mention a few, anovulations, infertility, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, sleep apnoea etc. Lack of early treatment leads to disease progression with gradual worsening of the symptoms and further metabolic derangements can occur. Estimation of the TSH levels is the single most sensitive index of thyroid function
