Article Excerpts about Inguinal hernia

A hernia is a condition in which part of the intestine bulges through a weak area in muscles in the abdomen. An inguinal hernia occurs in the groin (the area between the abdomen and thigh). It is called "inguinal" because the intestines push through a weak spot in the inguinal canal, which is a triangle-shaped opening between layers of abdominal muscle near the groin. (Source: excerpt from Inguinal Hernia: NIDDK)

Definitions of Inguinal hernia:

An abdominal hernia with an external bulge in the GROIN region. It can be classified by the location of herniation. Indirect inguinal hernias occur through the internal inguinal ring. Direct inguinal hernias occur through defects in the ABDOMINAL WALL (transversalis fascia) in Hesselbach's triangle. The former type is commonly seen in children and young adults; the latter in adults. - (Source - Diseases Database)

Hernia in which a loop of intestine enters the inguinal canal; the most common type of hernia in males - (Source - WordNet 2.1)
