Glossary for Intestinal Conditions

  • Amebic dysentery: Ameba-caused bacterial bowel infection and ulceration.
  • Anorexia: Any type of appetite loss; often refers to anorexia nervosa
  • Ascariasis: Large intestinal roundworm from 6 to 13 inches.
  • Balantidiasis: Intestinal infection with a parasitic protozoa (Balantidium coli) resulting in intestinal inflammation. It is usually transmitted through direct or indirect contact with pig fecal matter.
  • Blastomycosis: A fungal infection caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis and resulting in lung, skin, bone and genitourinary involvement.
  • Bloody stool: Blood appearing in the stool.
  • Bowel conditions: Medical conditions that affect the bowels
  • Celiac Disease: Digestive intolerance to gluten in the diet.
  • Chronic digestive diseases: Any disorder causing ongoing chronic digestive complaints.
  • Crohn's disease: Crohn's disease causes inflammation of the digestive system. It is one of a group of diseases called inflammatory bowel disease. The disease can affect any area from the mouth to the anus. It often affects the lower part of the small intestine called the ileum.
  • Diabetic Diarrhea: Diarrhea that occurs in diabetics as a result of the damage done by diabetes to the digestive system. Digestive system damage is caused by intestinal neuropathy (damage to intestinal nerves) or bacterial overgrowth or both.
  • Diarrhea: Loose or watery stool.
  • Digestive Diseases: Diseases that affect the digestive system
  • Dysentery: A general term for various bacterial digestive disorders.
  • Ectodermal dysplasia - hypohidrotic - hypothyroidism - ciliary diskinesia: A rare syndrome characterized by alopecia (A), nail problems (N), eye problems (O - ophthalmic), thyroid dysfunction (T), reduced sweating (H - hypohidrosis), freckles (E-ephelides), intestinal disease (E - enteropathy) and respiratory tract infections (R).
  • Enteritis: Inflammation of the intestine.
  • Frequent stools: Where a person frequently opens their bowels
  • Hernia: General term for an organ protruding where it should not.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease: Any type of digestive condition caused by bowel inflammation.
  • Intestinal obstruction: Blockage in the intestines of the digestive tract.
  • Nausea: The queasy feeling of nausea and often also vomiting.
  • Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome: A rare genetic disorder characterized by the development of numerous benign nodules on the inside lining of the intestinal wall as well as excess skin pigmentation usually around the lips and inner lining of the mouth.
  • Rapid gastric emptying: Dumping of undigested food from the stomach into intestine.
  • Ruvalcaba syndrome: A very rare disorder characterized by short stature, skeletal abnormalities, mental retardation and distinctive facial features.
  • Shigellosis: An infectious disease which affects the intestinal tract and is caused by the Shigella bacteria. The condition may be severe, especially in children, but may be asymptomatic in some cases. The disease can be transmitted through fecal-oral contact.
  • Small Intestine Cancer: Cancer of the small intestine.
  • Sudden Digestive Conditions: Various forms of sudden acute digestive upset.
  • Ulcerative colitis: Ulcerative colitis (Colitis ulcerosa, UC) is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis is a form of colitis, a disease of the intestine, specifically the large intestine or colon, that includes characteristic ulcers, or open sores, in the colon.
  • Viral dysentery: Contagious epidemic viral form of dysentery.
  • Vomiting: Vomiting or retching symptoms.
  • Watery stool: Watery stool is a form of diarrhea
