Glossary for Invasive candidiasis

  • Antibiotic failure: Failure of antibiotic treatments to resolve condition
  • Arthritis: General name for any type of joint inflammation, but often means age-related osteoarthritis.
  • Bone symptoms: Symptoms affecting the body's bones
  • Candidiasis: Fungal infection of moist areas such as mouth or vagina
  • Chills: Excessive feeling of coldness.
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Endocarditis: Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart
  • Eye infection: AN infection that occurs in the eye
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Fungal infections: Any condition caused by fungus.
  • Fungemia: The presence of fungi in the blood. Most commonly occurs in people with a compromised immune system. Other risk factors include dialysis, burns, diabetes and use of broad-spectrum antibiotics and steroids. The severity of symptoms is variable.
  • Granulocytopenia: Reduced number of granulocytes in the blood. Granulocytes are a type of white blood cell (neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils). White blood cells help protect the body from invading pathogen and hence act as the body's defense to infection.
  • Intertrigo: Skin inflammation from rubbing together of two skin areas
  • Joint symptoms: Symptoms affecting the joints.
  • Liver symptoms: Symptoms affecting the liver
  • Meningitis: Dangerous infection of the membranes surrounding the brain.
  • Muscle symptoms: Symptoms affecting the muscles of the body
  • Oral thrush: Candida fungal infection of the mouth.
  • Osteomyelitis: A bone inflammation caused by bacteria. The inflammation usually originates in another part of the body and is transported to the bone via the blood.
  • Paronychia: Skin infection of a nail
  • Pyelonephritis: Kidney and ureter infection usually bacterial from the bladder.
  • Spleen symptoms: Symptoms affecting the spleen
  • Systemic candidiasis: A candida infection that spreads throughout the body. If it invades major organs such as the brain and heart, death may result. It is rare in healthy individuals and tends to occur in immunocompromised individuals. The disorder is difficult to diagnose as it can invade almost any organ of the body and hence the symptoms are hugely variable.
