Glossary for Ischemic heart disease

  • Abdominal Pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Analgesic syndrome: The use of large quantities of pain-killer drugs can sometimes cause serious kidney damage as well as various other problems.
  • Angina Pectoris: Variant of Angina Pectoris, where episodic chest pain occurs without exertion or provocation, due to a transient spasm of a coronary artery; more common in women
  • Atherosclerosis: Atherosclerosis is a syndrome affecting arterial blood vessels. It is a chronic inflammatory response in the walls of arteries, in large part due to the accumulation of macrophage white blood cells and promoted by low density (especially small particle) lipoproteins (plasma proteins that carry cholesterol and triglycerides) without adequate removal of fats and cholesterol from the macrophages by functional high density lipoproteins (HDL). It is commonly referred to as a hardening or furring of the arteries. It is caused by the formation of multiple plaques within the arteries.
  • Atrial flutter: Heart arrhythmia where atria beat more often than ventricles
  • Breathing difficulties: Various types of breathing difficulty (dyspnea).
  • Cardiac arrest: Stoppage of the heart, usually caused by heart attack
  • Cardiac arrhythmia: Irregularity in the heart's beating rhythm.
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Dilated cardiomyopathy: A rare chronic heart muscle condition where one or both heart ventricles are dilated or have impaired contractility.
  • Dissecting aortic aneurysm: aortic dissection is a potentially life-threatening condition in which there is bleeding into and along the wall of the aorta, the major artery leaving the heart
  • Dyslipidemia: Abnormal lipid levels in the blood which may manifest as high cholesterol, triglycerides or LDL and low HDL.
  • Edema: Fluid retention in tissues
  • Heart conditions: Any condition that affects the heart
  • Heart disease: Any of various heart conditions.
  • Heart enlargement: Increased thickness of muscular walls of heart causing an abnormally large sized heart
  • Idiopathic, hypertrophic, subaortic stenosis: A rare heart disorder where thickening of parts of the heart (wall separating the heart chambers) reduces the size of heart chambers and hinders the flow of blood.
  • Myocardial ischaemia:
  • Obesity: An increase in the body weight greater than that required for normal function that is characterised by the accumulation of excessive fat
  • Orthopnoea: Breathlessness occurring when or aggravated by lying flat
  • Pericarditis: Inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart
  • Restrictive cardiomyopathy: A condition which is characterized by restriction to the function of the walls of the heart
  • Sick sinus syndrome: Heart rhythm disorder
  • Unstable angina: A condition which is characterized by chest pain of heart origin that occurs without stimuli
