Undiagnosed Causes of Kaposi's Sarcoma

As part of Kaposi's Sarcoma diagnosis, consider whether any of these underlying medical Kaposi's Sarcoma causes may have been overlooked:

  • AIDS
  • In people with AIDS, Kaposi's sarcoma is caused by an interaction between HIV, a weakened immune system, and the human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8). Occurrence of Kaposi's sarcoma has been linked to the spread of HIV and HHV-8 through sexual activity
  • People who have kidney transplants are also at risk for Kaposi's sarcoma

Undiagnosed Complications of Kaposi's Sarcoma

As part of Kaposi's Sarcoma diagnosis, consider whether any of these Kaposi's Sarcoma complications may have been overlooked:

  • Internal bleeding
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Anemia
  • Kaposi's sarcoma can involve the lungs and cause significant symptoms, including cough and shortness of breath. This diagnosis is made by a CT scan of the chest and a bronchoscopy. The tumors can return even after apparently successful treatment. Kaposi's sarcoma can be fatal for a person with AIDS
