Glossary for Kartagener syndrome

  • Bronchiectasis: Chronic bronchiole dilation from secretions and blockages.
  • Chronic Bronchitis: Chronic bronchitis is a chronic inflammation of the bronchi (medium-size airways) in the lungs.
  • Chronic Sinusitis: Chronic form of sinusitis, inflammation of the sinus cavities.
  • Chronic cough: The chronic noisy sudden expulsion of air from the respiratory tract
  • Cystic Fibrosis: Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disease affecting the exocrine (mucus) glands of the lungs, liver, pancreas, and intestines, causing progressive disability due to multisystem failure.
  • Dextrocardia: A rare anomaly where the heart is located on the right side of the chest instead of the normal left side of the chest. The condition is generally asymptomatic but is often associated with other abnormalities such as inverted location of other abdominal organs.
  • Dextrocardia-bronchiectasis-sinusitis: A genetic disorder characterized by sinusitis, bronchiectasis and situs inversus.
  • Glomerulonephritis: Kidney disease where the kidney's have problems removing waste material and excessive fluid.
  • Heart symptoms: Symptoms affecting the heart
  • Hepatocellular jaundice: A condition which is characterized by jaundice due to injury or damage to the hepatocellular cells of the liver
  • Ivemark II: A lethal syndrome characterized by lack of spleen function as well as kidney, liver, pancreatic and heart abnormalities. The condition generally results in death within days of birth.
  • Male infertility: The inability of the male to reproduce
  • Nasal polyp: A polyp that is found in the nasal passage
  • Pneumonia: Infection of the lung by bacteria, viruses or fungus.
  • Polycystic kidney disease: Genetic kidney disease causing kidney cysts.
  • Rales: are the clicking, rattling, or crackling noises heard on auscultation of the lung caused by the"popping open" of small airways and alveoli collapsed by fluid, exudate, or lack of aeration during expiration
  • Rhinitis: Nasal lining inflammation leading to runny/blocked nose
  • Sinusitis: Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses.
  • Wheezing: A whistling like continuous sound that is caused by the respiratory system
