Glossary for Kawasaki disease

  • Abdominal pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Acute rheumatic fever: Bacterial joint infection with risk of heart complications.
  • Aneurysm: Dangerous ballooning of a weakened area of an artery
  • Arrhythmias: Irregularity in the heart's beating rhythm.
  • Cervical lymphadenopathy: The enlargement of the cervical lymph nodes
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Congestive Heart Failure: Inadequate pumping and decline of heart function common in the elderly.
  • Conjunctivitis: Contagious eye infection
  • Cough: The noise produced from the sudden expulsion of air from the lungs
  • Depression: Various syndromes with excessive anxiety, phobias, or fear.
  • Diarrhea: Loose or watery stool.
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Fever of Unknown Origin: Fevers that occur for no apparent reason. The fever involves temperatures of greater than 38.3 degrees Celsius which occurs sporadically for more than three weeks. Infection and cancers are the most common causes of this type of fever.
  • Fretfulness: sense of being easily irritable.
  • Gall bladder conditions: Any condition that affects the gallbladder
  • Heart disease: Any of various heart conditions.
  • Heart failure: Slow failure of the heart (cardiac insufficiency).
  • Hepatitis: Any type of liver inflammation or infection.
  • Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis: Chronic arthritis affecting children and teens
  • Kawasaki disease: A childhood illness that generally affects the skin, mouth and lymph nodes.
  • Measles: Once common viral infection now rare due to vaccination.
  • Meningoencephalitis: A condition which is characterized by inflammation of the brain and meninges
  • Mononucleosis: Common infectious virus.
  • Myocarditis: Inflammation of the myocardium (muscle walls of the heart)
  • Pericarditis: Inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart
  • Rash: A reaction to the exposure of the skin to an allergen
  • Red tongue: Redness or inflammation of the tongue
  • Rocky Mountain spotted fever: A bacterial disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii and transmitted by ticks. The condition causes fever and a characteristic rash and may be fatal in severe or untreated cases.
  • Scarlet fever: A complication of infection from strep bacteria such as strep throat.
  • Seizures - intellectual deficit due to hydroxylysinuria: A rare syndrome characterized by mental retardation, seizures and high levels of hydroxylysine in the urine.
  • Spinal Muscular Atrophy: A rare condition characterized by progressive degeneration of the spinal and brainstem motor neurons. During fetal development excess primary neurons are formed. The body automatically destroys the extra primary neurons so that only some survive and mature into neurons. In spinal muscular dystrophy, the process that destroys the excess primary neurons doesn't switch off and continues destroying the neurons resulting in progressive motor problems. Various types of the condition range from mild to severe enough to cause death within a couple of years of birth.
  • Strawberry tongue: The occurrence of a tongue which visually appears similar to a strawberry in colour
  • Strep throat: Streptococcal bacterial throat infection.
  • Temporal arteritis: Inflamed head artery causing headache.
  • Thrombosis: Blood clot occurring in a blood vessel
  • Tiredness: Feeling tired either physically or mentally
  • Toxic Shock Syndrome: Severe immune reaction causing shock
  • Vasculitis: Inflammation of a blood or lymph vessel
  • Vomiting: Vomiting or retching symptoms.
