Glossary for Keratoconus

Amaurosis congenita of Leber: A rare genetic eye disorder characterized by blindness at birth or within years as well as other eye abnormalities.
Astigmatism: Vision impairment from irregularly shaped eye cornea or lens.
Atopic dermatitis: Skin disorder characterized by chronic inflammation, and pruritis. Often hereditary and associated with allergic rhinitis and asthma.
Biber-Haab-Dimmer dystrophy: An inherited eye disorder where the cornea of the eye develops abnormal lattice-shaped lines caused by the abnormal deposition of a substance called amyloid. The abnormal deposits cause progressive vision impairment.
Blurred vision: Blurriness of vision or images.
Cornea disorders: Disorders affecting the cornea of the eye
Corneal Dystrophies: A group of various disorders affecting the eye's cornea
Corneal scarring: Scarring occurring on the cornea.
Down Syndrome: A chromosome syndrome causing physical effects and mental retardation.
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: A group of inherited connective tissue disorders primarily involving the joints and skin. There are 11 disorders in the group.
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type VI: A rare genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by lax joints, scoliosis and fragile sclera of the eye - Ehlers Danlos type with predominant ocular abnormalities.
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, 6B: A rare genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by lax joints, scoliosis and fragile sclera of the eye - Ehlers Danlos type with predominant ocular abnormalities but lysyl-hydroxylase activity is normal1.
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, kyphoscoliosis type: A rare genetic connective tissue disorder caused by deficiency of the lysyl hydroxylase enzyme and is characterized by progressive scoliosis and muscle weakness and fragile sclera - previously known as EDS type 6.
Excessive eye rubbing: presence of an irritant can cause excessive eye irritation

Mental retardation, keratoconus, febrile seizures, and sinoatrial block: A rare disorder characterized by mental retardation, seizures with fever, an eye disorder and a heart anomaly. The heart condition requires a pacemaker in some cases.
Myopia: Short-sightedness often requiring glasses
Osteogenesis imperfecta: Weak bones ("brittle bone disease") and loose joints
Osteogenesis imperfecta, type 2: A rare lethal form of the genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by fragile bones, blue sclerae and facial and tooth abnormalities.
Osteogenesis imperfecta, type 2A: A rare lethal form of a genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by fragile bones, blue sclerae and facial and tooth abnormalities. Type IIA has a different origin of the genetic mutation but the clinical features are similar. Type IIA involves a defect on the COL1A2 gene. The main difference is that type IIA tends to involve a large head and dark blue eyes.
Osteogenesis imperfecta, type IIB: A rare, recessively inherited, lethal form of a genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by fragile bones, blue sclerae and facial and tooth abnormalities. Type IIB has a different origin of the genetic mutation but the clinical features are similar. Type IIB involves a defect on the CRTAP gene on chromosome 3p22. The main difference is that type IIA tends to involve a small head and white or light blue eyes.
Photophobia: An exaggerated or irrational fear of light.
Retinitis Pigmentosa: Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of inherited disorders characterized by progressive peripheral vision loss and night vision difficulties that can lead to central vision loss.
Retinopathy of prematurity: Eye problems that occur in premature underweight infants who are exposed to a high oxygen environment.
Vernal keratoconjunctivitis: A rare allergic type of conjunctivitis (inflammation of the lining of the eyelid and most of the eye) which occurs seasonally in warm weather
Vision distortion: Distortions or changes to vision
Vision loss: Impaired vision or loss of vision
