Breath says it all: Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the University of Colorado at Boulder, have come up with a novel way of detecting several diseases, by sampling the patients breath for disease markers using laser lights. The technique called cavity-enhanced direct optical frequency comb spectroscopy shows promise of becoming an indispensable tool in the diagnosis of diseases such as asthma, cancer, kidney failure and diabetes. Optical frequency comb spectroscopy was developed in the 1990s and it shows the future of diagnosis with the help of technology. The breath that we exhale has several chemical molecules which may be indicators of disease, like excess levels of methylamine may indicate liver or kidney disease, ammonia may be a sign of renal failure, elevated acetone levels may indicate diabetes, and nitric oxide levels can be used to diagnose asthma. The study involved the volunteers to exhale into an optical cavity (a space between two mirrors) and a pulsed laser light was then aimed into the optical cavity. The laser light bounced back and forth between the mirrors, covering a distance of several kilometres by the time it exited the optical cavity. During this time, the laser light struck all the molecules within the cavity thus, detecting a wide range of molecules. This technique will thus herald the future of low cost, non-invasive and rapid screening for diseases.
