Glossary for Klinefelter syndrome

  • Autoimmune disorders - Teratogenic Agent: There is strong evidence to indicate that the development of autoimmune disorders during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Breast Cancer: Cancer of the breast.
  • Breast swelling: Swelling or enlargement of one or both breasts
  • Decreased libido: Decreased libido is a reduction in the sex drive
  • Delayed puberty: A lack of sexual maturation in an adolescent at an age significantly higher than the average age that child of that epidemiology attains puberty.
  • Depression: Various syndromes with excessive anxiety, phobias, or fear.
  • Enlarged prostate: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that may restrict the flow of urine from the bladder.
  • Fertility symptoms: Fertility problems for men or women.
  • Gynecomastia: Enlarged male breasts
  • Hair loss: Loss or thinning of head or body hair
  • Hypogonadism: Medical term for a defect of the reproductive system that results in lack of function of the gonads (ovaries or testes).
  • Hypopituitarism: A disorder caused by reduced pituitary hormone levels. Hormones produce by the pituitary gland produces growth hormones, prolactin, thyroid stimulating hormone, antidiuretic hormone and others.
  • Infertility: Inability of couples to establish pregnancy by having sexual intercourse over a period of time, usually more than 1 year in length.
  • Intersex conditions: When the sex of an individual is not clear and may comprise characteristics of both sexes
  • Kallmann Syndrome: A rare inherited condition characterized by hypogonadism, eunuchoidism and impaired or absent sense of smell. The condition occurs as a result of failure of a part of the hypothalamus which results in hormonal imbalance.
  • Klinefelter syndrome: A genetic condition where males have at least one extra X chromosome or extra copies of both the X and Y chromosomes in each cell. Normally male cells contain one X and one Y chromosome in each cell. The condition is not inherited but is a result of problems during cell division. Klinefelter syndrome variants is a more severe form of the condition as it involves more than one extra X or X and Y chromosome in each cell.
  • Male infertility: The inability of the male to reproduce
  • Marfan syndrome: A genetic connective tissue disorder involving a defect of chromosome 15q21.1 which affects the production of the fibrillin needed to make connective tissue.
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Osteoporosis: Bone thinning and weakening from bone calcium depletion.
  • Psychological problems: Symptoms affecting emotional or psychological factors.
  • Reading symptoms: Problems with reading ability
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: Autoimmune form of arthritis usually in teens or young adults.
  • Sex chromosome conditions: Any condition that affects the sex chromosomes
  • Sexual Conditions: Any condition that affects sexual function
  • Small testicle: Small size of testicle or testes
  • X Chromosome Disorders: Any condition that affects the x chromosome of an individual
  • Y Chromosome Disorders: A disorder that is caused by the occurrence of genetic material on the Y chromosome
