Glossary for Lassa fever

  • Abdominal Pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Anuria: Total loss of urination
  • Arenaviruses: Rare viral infection usually caught from rodents.
  • Back pain: Pain from the back or spine.
  • Bolivian hemorrhagic fever: An infectious disease that occurs in Bolivia and is caused by the Machupo virus. Transmission can occur through contact with infected rodent (Calomys callosus) droppings. The incubation period lasts from one to two weeks.
  • Coagulopathy: A disorder of the blood where it fails to clot normally.
  • Deafness: Inability to hear sounds.
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Diarrhea: Loose or watery stool.
  • Diseases contagious from animals: Diseases that can be contracted from animals
  • Diseases contagious from rodents: Diseases that can be contracted from rodents
  • Dry cough: Dry non-productive cough without producing sputum
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Hepatocellular jaundice: A condition which is characterized by jaundice due to injury or damage to the hepatocellular cells of the liver
  • Hypotension: Blood pressure that is too low
  • Hypovolemia: An abnormal decrease in volume of blood.
  • Lassa fever: Infectious rat-borne West African disease.
  • Muscle pain: Pain that is located anatomically in the region of muscles
  • Myalgia: Muscle aches and pains
  • Neutropenia: Reduced number of granulocytes in the blood
  • Peripheral vasoconstriction: The occurrence of constriction if the peripheral vasculature
  • Rodent-borne disease: Any disease that is carried by rodents
  • Sensorineural deafness: A condition which is characterized by deafness due to a sensineural deficit
  • Sensorineural hearing loss: Hearing loss due to abnormal functioning or damage to the hearing nerve or the cochlea (inner ear) or the part of the brain that processes sound. The hearing problem may be present at birth or may be acquired through such things as aging, excessive noise or diseases such as meningitis.
  • Shock: Severe condition from reduced blood circulation
  • Sore throat: Discomfort in the throat or with swallowing
  • Thrombocytopenia: Decreased platelets in the blood
  • Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers: Viral infections causing hemorrhagic fever (i.e. bleeding)
  • Viral diseases: Any disease that is caused by a virus
  • Vomiting: Vomiting or retching symptoms.
