Glossary for Leprosy

Amyloidosis: A rare group of metabolic disorders where a protein called amyloid accumulates in body organs and tissues where it can cause damage and is potentially fatal. Symptoms depend on the organs involved. There are numerous forms of the condition: primary amyloidosis, secondary amyloidosis, hemodialysis-associated amyloidosis and familial amyloidosis.
Bacterial diseases: Diseases caused by a bacterial infection
Blindness: The inability to see out of the eyes
Crome syndrome: A very rare disorder characterized by various abnormalities including mental retardation, epilepsy and eye and kidney problems.
Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma: A malignancy of the T-cells which make up part of the body's immune system. The cancer is characterized by the excessive proliferation of T-cells which are a type of white blood cell. The degree of skin involvement is variable.
Diseases contagious from droplets: Diseases that can be contracted from droplets
Erythema multiforme: An allergic inflammatory skin disorder which has a variety of causes and results in skin and mucous membrane lesions that affect mainly the hands, forearms, feet, mouth nose and genitals.
Erythema nodosum: Allergic skin condition usually on the legs
Eye damage: When there is any damage to the eye
Hypomelanotic disorder: Lack of pigmentation
Hypopigmentation: Lack of pigmentation
Leishmaniasis: A rare infectious disease caused by any of a number of parasitic Leishmania species. Infection can cause any of three different manifestations: cutaneous leishmaniasis, mucosal leishmaniasis and visceral leishmaniasis.
Lupus: Autoimmune disease with numerous effects on various organs and linings.
Mycosis fungoides: Mycosis fungoides is a rare form of T-cell lymphoma of the skin. The disease is typically slowly progressive and chronic.
Nerve symptoms: Symptoms affecting the nerves
Numbness: Loss of feeling or sensation
Pityriasis Versicolor: Fungal skin infection
Rash: A reaction to the exposure of the skin to an allergen
Relapsing Polychondritis: A chronic disease that affects multiple joints resulting in inflammation and degeneration
Sarcoidosis: Rare autoimmune disease usually affecting the lungs.
Scleroderma: A rare, progressive connective tissue disorder involving thickening and hardening of the skin and connective tissue. There are a number of forms of scleroderma with some forms being systemic (involving internal organs).
Skin symptoms: Symptoms affecting the skin.
Syphilis: A sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacteria (Treponema pallidum). The condition is often asymptomatic in the early stages but one or more sores may be present in the early stages. Untreated syphilis usually results in remission of visible symptoms but further severe damage may occur to internal organs and other body tissues which can result in death.
Tinea versicolor: A condition which is characterized by a chronic noninflammatory multiple macular patches
Ulcer: A local defect in the mucosa
Vitiligo: Skin pigment changes, usually harmless but sometimes embarrassing.
