List of Risk Factors for Leptospirosis

The list of risk factors mentioned for Leptospirosis in various sources includes:

Risk factors discussion:

Leptospirosis (General): DBMD (Excerpt)

It is an occupational hazard for many people who work outdoors or with animals, for example, farmers, sewer workers, veterinarians, fish workers, dairy farmers, or military personnel. It is a recreational hazard for campers or those who participate in outdoor sports in contaminated areas and has been associated with swimming, wading, and whitewater rafting in contaminated lakes and rivers. The incidence is also increasing among urban children. (Source: excerpt from Leptospirosis (General): DBMD)

Leptospirosis: DBMD (Excerpt)

Workers in rice fields, sugar cane plantations, mines, sewer systems, and slaughterhouses; animal caretakers and veterinarians; and travelers to tropical parts of the world involved in recreational activities in fresh water. Recreational exposures can include rafting, kayaking, and swimming. (Source: excerpt from Leptospirosis: DBMD)

About risk factors:

Risk factors for Leptospirosis are factors that do not seem to be a direct cause of the disease, but seem to be associated in some way. Having a risk factor for Leptospirosis makes the chances of getting a condition higher but does not always lead to Leptospirosis. Also, the absence of any risk factors or having a protective factor does not necessarily guard you against getting Leptospirosis. For general information and a list of risk factors, see the risk center.
