Glossary for Lichen planus

  • Blue skin: Blueness of the skin
  • Candidiasis: Fungal infection of moist areas such as mouth or vagina
  • Canker sores: Ulcers of the mouth or nearby areas
  • Erythema multiforme: An allergic inflammatory skin disorder which has a variety of causes and results in skin and mucous membrane lesions that affect mainly the hands, forearms, feet, mouth nose and genitals.
  • Fungal nail infections: Fungal conditions of the toenail or fingernail
  • Genital warts: Genital warts often from a viral STD.
  • Graft-versus-host disease: A disease characterised by an immune response as a result of a transplantation or transfusion resulting in a widespread systemic inflammatory response
  • Leukoplakia: A mouth disorder where white patches form on the inside of the mouth and on the tongue. Mostly occurs in older people.
  • Lichen sclerosis: Disease causing leathery or dry skin in genital areas.
  • Lichen simplex chronicus: Lichen simplex chronicus refers to thickened itchy skin that results from persistently rubbing or scratching an area of skin.
  • Lupus: Autoimmune disease with numerous effects on various organs and linings.
  • Molluscum contagiosum: Common wart-causing virus.
  • Mouth redness: Redness or red spots in the mouth
  • Mouth ulcers: Ulcers in the mouth membranes or oral areas
  • Mycosis fungoides: Mycosis fungoides is a rare form of T-cell lymphoma of the skin. The disease is typically slowly progressive and chronic.
  • Mycosis fungoides, familial: A rare form of lymphatic cancer (T-cell lymphoma) that primarily affects the skin and tends to occur with higher than normal frequency within a family. The skin is affected first, then the lymph nodes become inflamed and usually cancerous. The cancer can then spread to organs such as the liver, lungs and bone marrow. Survival depends on how early treatment starts. Patients diagnosed in the early stages can survive more than 12 years whereas once the cancer has spread to other organs, death usually occurs within three years.
  • Neurodermatitis: Lichen simplex chronicus refers to thickened itchy skin that results from persistently rubbing or scratching an area of skin.
  • Oral Ulcer: An open sore inside the mouth.
  • Oral leukoplakia: A mouth characterized by white spots or patches in the mucous membranes on the tongue and inside the mouth.
  • Oral thrush: Candida fungal infection of the mouth.
  • Pityriasis Rosea: Skin inflammation
  • Pruritus: The sensation of itch
  • Psoriasis: Chronic skin rash condition, usually red or silver and blistery.
  • Scaly skin: Toughness or scaliness of the skin
  • Secondary syphilis: A condition which is characterized by fever, multiform skin eruptions, iritis, alopecia, mucous patches and severe pain in the head and joints
  • Skin Cancer: Cancer of the skin; the most common type of cancer.
  • Skin conditions: Any condition that affects the skin
  • Sutton disease 2: A rare condition characterized by recurring periods of painful inflamed mouth ulcers.
  • Thrush: A contagious disease which is caused by a fungus
  • Tinea unguium: A condition which is characterized by tinea of the nails
  • Vulvar cancer: Cancer (malignant) that develops in the tissue of the vulva.
  • Vulvar lesions: A condition which is characterized lesions which occur on the vulva
