Glossary for Lymphatic Filariasis

  • Arm swelling: A swelling located on the arm
  • Bancroftian filariasis:
  • Breast swelling: Swelling or enlargement of one or both breasts
  • Cirrhosis of the liver: Scarring of the liver from alcohol or other causes.
  • Congestive Heart Failure: Inadequate pumping and decline of heart function common in the elderly.
  • Elephantiasis: Lymphatic obstruction which causes severe swelling in the legs and groin area. It is usually caused by infection with a parasitic worm which is transmitted by mosquito bites.
  • Eosinophilia: This is when there is an abnormal increase in the eosinophils in the blood
  • Groin swelling: Swelling in the groin joint area
  • Immune disorders: Disorders that affect the immune system
  • Irons-Bhan syndrome: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by lymphoedema in the legs, heart defects and a hydrocele (swollen testicles).
  • Kidney damage: Any damage that occurs to the kidneys
  • Loiasis: A parasitic worm (Loa Loa) which is transmitted through a bit by the horsefly, deer fly or the Mango fly. The skin and eyes are usually affected. The worm larvae enter the blood stream through a bite by an infected fly. The adult worms move through the skin, eyes or other organs often causing a localized inflammation. Central Africa is the main area affected. Symptoms may take up to one and a half decades to occur and serious complications can occur depending on where the adult worm travels to within the body.
  • Lymph symptoms: Symptoms affecting the lymphatic system or lymph nodes
  • Lymphangitis: Inflammation of the lymphatic channels caused by an infectious agent.
  • Lymphedema: Swelling causes by lymphatic fluid retention
  • Lymphoma: Cancer involving lymph nodes and the immune system.
  • Mosquito-borne diseases: Diseases that are carried by the mosquito
  • Nephrotic syndrome: Various kidney glomeruli conditions
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Pain: A feeling of suffering, agony, distress caused by the stimulation of pain fibres in the nervous system
  • Pruritus: The sensation of itch
  • River Blindness: Skin and eye infection caused by the helminth (worm) 'Onchocerca volvulus', transmitted via fly bites and usually seen only in parts of Africa, the Middle East and South America
  • Sexual symptoms: Symptoms affecting the sexual organs
  • Society problems: Difficulty interacting in society.
  • Superficial thrombophlebitis: Inflammation of a vein wall
  • Swelling symptoms: Symptoms causing swelling or enlargement.
  • Swollen lymph nodes: Swelling or enlargement of the lymph nodes
  • Worm conditions: Any condition that is caused by infestation of worms
  • Wuchereria bancrofti: An infectious disease caused by a thin, white, threadworm which affects the lymphatic circulation. It is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito.
