Glossary for Machado-Joseph Disease

  • Arm weakness: Weakness of one or both arms
  • Ataxia: It is a neurological sign and symptom consisting of gross lack of co-ordination of muscle movements.
  • Autosomal Dominant Genetic Diseases: Any conditions that are related to any non-sex-determining chromosome
  • Autosomal Genetic Diseases: Any conditions that are related to any non-sex-determining chromosome
  • Clumsiness: Clumsy motions or poor coordination
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Dominant Genetic Diseases: Genetic disease where the mutated gene is dominant
  • Genetic Disease: Any disease that is handed down to oneself through the chromosomes of ones parents
  • Leg weakness: Muscle weakness of the leg
  • Pneumonia: Infection of the lung by bacteria, viruses or fungus.
  • Spasticity: Continuous contraction or stiffness of muscles.
  • Spinocerebellar ataxia 2: A disorder involving degeneration of the brain and spinal cord and causing progressive coordination difficulty and other symptoms. Symptom generally become more severe earlier than in spinocerebellar ataxia 1.
  • Spinocerebellar ataxia 3: A rare genetic disorder (chromosome 14q32.1defect) characterized by . Gait ataxia and dysarthria (speech disorder) also occur and are symptoms common to all the spinocerebellar ataxia types. The duration of the disease is 1-20 years.
