Glossary for Malignant hyperthermia

  • Arrhythmias: Irregularity in the heart's beating rhythm.
  • Brain damage: Damage to the brain from various causes
  • Congenital myopathy: A very rare inherited disorder where muscles are overly-responsive to stimuli because of an abnormality in the muscle membranes. It causes prolonged muscle contraction which is muscle stiffness. The two main forms of myotonia congenital are Thomsen and Becker disease which are respectively inherited dominantly and recessively.
  • Contractures, congenital, torticollis and malignant hyperthermia: A very rare syndrome characterized by contractures, torticollis and a hyperthermic reaction to general anesthetics.
  • Electrolyte imbalance: impairment in the level of electrolytes in the body
  • Froster-Iskenius-Waterson syndrome: A rare syndrome characterized by multiple joint contractures at birth, hyperthermia and twisting of neck muscles.
  • Heart failure: Slow failure of the heart (cardiac insufficiency).
  • Hyperkalaemia: Increased concentration of potassium in the blood.
  • Hyperphosphataemia: An increased level of phosphate in the circulation above that which is considered normal
  • Hyperthermia: Hyperthermia is an increase in body temperature in the context of an unchanged thermoregulatory point in the brain.
  • Internal bleeding: The loss of blood internally from the circulation
  • Kidney disease: Reduced kidney function from various causes.
  • King-Denborough syndrome: A rare birth disorder characterized by musculoskeletal abnormalities and nerve muscle problems.
  • Lactic Acidosis: Acidic blood (acidosis) due to buildup of lactate
  • Malignant hyperthermia susceptibility type 1: A rare, potential lethal disorder that is triggered by general anesthetic or certain muscle relaxant drugs. On exposure to the drugs, muscle metabolism is severely disrupted and the body is unable to control its temperature which can lead to death without treatment. The chromosomal defect for type 1 is located at 19q13.1.
  • Metabolic Acidosis: Metabolic acidosis is a process which if unchecked leads to acidemia (i.e. blood pH is low (less than 7.35) due to increased production of H+ by the body or the inability of the body to form bicarbonate (HCO3-) in the kidney.
  • Native American myopathy: A rare genetic disorder characterized by muscle disease from birth, cleft palate and malignant hyperthermia.
  • Pulmonary edema: Severe condition of excess fluid in the lungs.
  • Respiratory failure: Failure of the respiratory system
  • Rhabdomyolysis: Skeletal muscle injury or death, which releases muscle fibres into the blood.
  • Rigidity: When there is inflexibility or stiffness
