Mitral regurgitation

Introduction: Mitral regurgitation

The backflow of blood between the two left heart chambers because a problem with the mitral valve prevents it from closing properly. Blood flows back from the left ventricle into the left atrium of the heart. The mitral valve is a heart valve that controls the flow of blood between heart chambers. Mitral regurgitation can be caused by conditions such as rheumatic fever, myocarditis and congenital valve abnormalities. Congestive heart failure may ultimately result in severe cases. Also called mitral insufficiency.
