Article Excerpts about Mitral-valve prolapse

Mitral-valve prolapse (MVP) is frequently diagnosed in healthy people and is, for the most part, harmless. Most people suffer no symptoms at all. New estimates are that about 2 percent of the adult population has the condition. MVP is also called floppy valve syndrome, Barlow's or Reid-Barlow's syndrome, ballooning mitral valve, midsystolic-click-late systolic murmur syndrome, or click murmur syndrome. MVP can be present from birth or develop at any age and occurs equally in both men and women. MVP is one of the most frequently made cardiac diagnoses in the United States. (Source: excerpt from Facts About Mitral-Valve Prolapse: NHLBI)

Definitions of Mitral-valve prolapse:

Abnormal protrusion of one or both of the leaflets of the mitral valve into the left atrium during systole. This may be accompanied by mitral regurgitation, systolic murmur, nonejection click, or cardiac arrhythmia. - (Source - Diseases Database)

Mitral-valve prolapse is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Mitral-valve prolapse, or a subtype of Mitral-valve prolapse, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.
