Inflammation of the mucous membranes. Mucositis can occur anywhere along the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus as it is all lined with mucous membranes. Mucous membranes are mucous-producing moist inner linings present in some organs and body cavities such as the digestive system. Mucositis is often associated with chemotherapy as the chemicals destroy the surface of the digestive tract, leaving the mucous membrane exposed to infection and ulceration.
