Appendix (organ): The appendix is a hollow structure with a blind end that is attached to the cecum of the large. The appendix is a part of the digestive system and the gastrointestinal tract. It is located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen near the area where the small intestine links into the large intestine. The appendix may have no function, although it might be useful in protecting beneficial bacteria of the colon. Conditions that afflict the appendicitis include appendicitis.
