Description of Arsenic trioxide

Arsenic trioxide: As2O3; dissolves in water to produce arsenous acid, H3AsO3; used in the treatment of skin diseases and historically for malaria and as a tonic; also used externally as a caustic. SYN: arsenous oxide, white arsenic.

Arsenic trioxide: A substance that induces programmed cell death (apoptosis) in certain cancer cells. It belongs to the family of drugs called antineoplastics.

Arsenic trioxide induces apoptosis in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) cells; downregulates the promyelocytic leukemia protein/retinoic acid receptor-alpha (PML/RARa) fusion protein; promotes cell differentiation; suppresses cell proliferation; and is pro-angiogenic.(NCI04)
