Introduction: Basal ganglia

Description of Basal ganglia

Basal ganglia: originally, all the large masses of gray matter at the base of the cerebral hemisphere; as currently used, the striate body (caudate and lentiform nuclei); cell groups functionally associated with the striate body, such as the subthalamic nucleus and substantia nigra are frequently, but incorrectly, grouped as part of the basal nuclei/ganglia.basal nuclei, under nucleus.

Basal ganglia (organ): The basal ganglia are paired masses of grey matter located within the white matter of the brain. The basal ganglia help to control muscle tone and sequences of movements of muscles, such as occurs when walking.

Conditions that can afflict the basal ganglia include Parkinson's disease, Tourette's syndrome, Huntington's disease, head trauma, tumors, stroke, and infection.
