Introduction: Benzodiazepine

Description of Benzodiazepine

Benzodiazepine (medical condition): There is strong evidence to indicate that exposure to Benzodiazepine during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.

Benzodiazepine: (1) Parent compound for the synthesis of a number of psychoactive compounds (e.g., diazepam, chlordiazepoxide). (2) A class of compounds with antianxiety, hypnotic, anticonvulsant, and skeletal muscle relaxant properties.

Benzodiazepine: bicyclic structure consisting of fused benzene and diazepine rings; many compounds with this structure have psychotropic and neurotropic properties, and are used as sedatives, anticonvulsants, muscle relaxants, and in related applications.
