Bioluminescence: (1) Light produced by certain organisms from the oxidation of luciferins through the action of luciferases and with negligible production of heat, chemical energy being converted directly into light energy. Bioluminescence: emission of visible light in living cells, caused by catalytic chemical reactions, without emitting a corresponding degree of heat; found in certain organisms such as fireflies, jellyfish, fungi, and bacteria.
